Orangeburgh District, SC, DNA

Group Administrator: Lynn Teague - Email: Teague_L@bellsouth.net

Project Background

This group includes DNA studies related to descendants of persons who lived in the old Orangeburgh District in South Carolina (modern counties of Orangeburg, Lexington, Calhoun, Barnwell, Bamberg and parts of Aiken and Allendale). The District first experienced significant European settlement in the mid-1730's, with the establishment of a series of inland townships. Settlers included substantial numbers of Swiss and later German immigrants as well as traders and other settlers from existing coastal towns in South Carolina and other English colonies to the north.

Both male line (yDNA) and female line (mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA) studies are included in this group. In many cases, the Orangeburgh group supplements a DNA surname group or other group. In those cases, web sites with more information on the results of surname-specific group studies usually can be found by going to the surname study pages listed at the ftDNA website (http://www.familytreedna.com/Surname.aspx).
