Deane W. Merrill (1938-2014)

David Wayne Merrell (1950-2019)

Howard Emerson Merrill (1930-2021)

The Merrill surname DNA project was established in Aug 2005. All males named Merrill or Merrell (or variant spellings) are encouraged to join the project. Females can have a male Merrill relative (brother, father, uncle, cousin, etc) tested as a representative of their Merrill line. We recommend that everyone test for at least 37 markers, which provides the best comparisons with other project members.  In some cases, an upgrade to 67 markers or SNP testing may be necessary to confirm relationships.

So far we have identified a distinctive DNA 'signature' for seven historical Merrill families, some documented as far back as the 1500's. The majority of those tested can be associated with a specific immigrant (or early) Merrill ancestor, though some (ca 15%) can not. Four Y-DNA haplogroups are represented: about 2/3 are R1b, 1/3 G, plus one member each of haplogroups J and T.

To view the project results, click on the 'DNA Results' tab at left. Individuals are grouped by families wherever possible; the 'colorized' option is useful in highlighting differences within each family group. Only the results of those who tested with FTDNA are included. Since its beginning, the Merrill DNA project has sought out Y-DNA results from all public sources, including some from testing laboratories that are no longer in business. A spreadsheet with all known Merrill Y-DNA results is available on request.

Another important goal of the project is exploring the "deep ancestry" of Merrills through SNP testing. Suggestions for SNP testing are given for each family group on the results chart. HOWEVER we strongly suggest that you consult us before ordering SNP tests, so we can offer advice appropriate to your particular situation. Often we can suggest the most efficient course to follow, and save you money as well. Those who have already done SNP testing should also join the appropriate Y-DNA haplogroup project.

Many Merrill project members also have maternal line (mtDNA) and/or autosomal (Family Finder) test results. Please keep in mind that the Merrill DNA Project is a surname project, and as such can only provide guidance regarding paternal line Y-DNA testing. Members with mtDNA test results should also join the relevant mtDNA haplogroup project.

The General Fund is an FTDNA feature that allows individuals to donate money for testing by other current or potential project members. Donations can be anonymous if desired.
