Background

The McCabe Family DNA study was started in the spring of 2001 in an attempt to find the father of an 1840's McCabe orphan in the U.S. Since that time, the project has significantly expanded as explained under Project Goals. If anyone is skeptical about DNA studies being of any genealogical value, read below about the SUCCESS STORIES in this McCabe Surname DNA Study.

NOTE: If you have reached this page via Google or other web search engines, and have found family information of value to your research and would like to contact individuals associated with this new genealogy information, please send the appropriate information to the administrator (email address above), and he will forward the question or information on to the person to whom your message is addressed.

SUCCESS STORIES: Since its inception, the McCabe DNA project has had a large number of genealogical brickwalls that have been shattered with the use of DNA. These stories will be briefly listed with reference to the appropriate Group and/or Kit numbers provided so that readers can find the details on the Y-DNA RESULTS section and the discussion of these results in the RESULTS section, both sections of which can be found at the links on the left side of this page.

1, Finding the father of an 1840's McCabe orphan (Group A, kits 825, 826, 827 & 1106).
2. Finding the ancestral paternal line of the Allegheny County, PA, William McCabe line (Group A, Kit #54231).
3. Disproving the hypothesis that three McCabe brothers came together to the U.S. (Groups A, B, & C-3).
4. Proving that the Mecabe name must have been derived from the McCabe surname (Group B).
5. Proving that the Cabe surname was derived from the McCabe name (Group G).
6. Showing that a specific McCabe family line has common ancestry with members of the Propes, Ball, and Beatty (Beattie) families (Group E).
7. Showing that a specific McCabe-named male who had his McCabe name changed to the YOUNG surname at a very young age, is most likely descended from the EWING family, not the McCabe family (Group J, Kit 129216).
8. Showing that a man who was adopted into the Searcy family most likely has Cabe ancestry. (Group G, Kit 146133).
9. Showing that an American man, who could not trace his McCabe ancestry back further than his g. grandfather, definitely descends from James McCabe, 1767 Irish immigrant to Nova Scotia, Canada (originally to Philadelphia, USA in the 1740’s), and in fact, has the deduced ancestral haplotype (at 67 markers) of this McCabe family (Group C-3, Kit 145047).

If you are a male with the surname of McCabe, Mecabe or Cabe and wish to join this surname DNA project (or if you are organizing a DNA test for a male with the surname of McCabe, Mecabe, or Cabe, or if your surname is NOT McCabe, or variations thereof, but you expect that your straight line male ancestry DOES include a McCabe male), click on "REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP" at the left side of this page and follow the directions. If you have questions about these directions, contact the group administrator.

If you have questions about DNA testing (Benefits? Procedures?, etc.), two options are available: (1) Click on the FAQ (frequently asked questions) link at the left side of this page. (2) Alternatively, click on "REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP" at the left side of this page. On the new page, without “logging in”, click on “Order Your Test Now”. On the next page search for "Genetic Genealogy Tutorials" (lower right corner), and click on the appropriate link to read information on genetic genealogy.

If you are searching for a DNA testing company and would like to know why the McCabe surname DNA project is located at FTDNA, go to the following website:

If you would like to contribute funds for either general support of McCabe (also Mecabe or Cabe) DNA testing, OR for a specific family member to be tested, click on the "CONTRIBUTE TO THE SURNAME PROJECT GENERAL FUND link at the left side of this page. If your choice is to contribute to the expenses for the testing of a specific individual, first contact the McCabe group administrator by clicking on his email address at the top of this page.

PRICES for participation in the McCabe Surname DNA Project: Participating in a group DNA project produces remarkable savings as compared to ordering as an individual without participation in a group project. The prices are given for the following number of markers studied, followed by the price (in parentheses) if one does NOT belong to a specific group project:
12 markers, $99 ($119)
37 markers, $149 ($169)
67 markers, $239 ($268)
Note that a $4 postage charge is added to each amount given.

If one starts with a low number of markers and wishes to upgrade to more markers (without sending in another sample), the prices are as follows:
from 12 to 25, $49......... from 12 to 37, $99
from 12 to 67, $189....... from 25 to 37, $49
from 25 to 67, $148....... from 37 to 67, $99
These prices are correct as of May 2010. Prices are infrequently reduced for a short time interval and these reductions will be shared on this site.

FOR THOSE MEN WHO HAVE ALREADY BEEN TESTED BY ANOTHER MAJOR DNA TESTING COMPANY, the FTDNA Company has announced significant price reductions for testing with FTDNA as shown for the following markers: 12, $59; 25, $89; 37, $119; 67, $208. For details, go to the following website:
http://www.familytreedna.com/PDF/PROMO_GAP.pdf

The McCabe project administrator does NOT recommend starting with only 12 markers, as too many matches often result that are found to be NOT significant at the 37 or 67 marker levels.
