Sponsored by the Maine Irish Heritage Center, the Maine Gaeltacht Project invites any Irish descendant with Maine roots or connections to test their DNA and join our project.  You will hopefully locate cousins throughout the world , especially in Ireland.  If you do not know the exact townland or County in Ireland from which your ancestors came, this simple test may help you pinpoint this often difficult problem in Irish genealogy.  You simply swab your cheek so a kit will make an excellent gift for a loved one. Anyone may join.

In Maine, we find pockets of Irish from the same townlands and counties clustered together, each helping the next Irishman or woman to emigrate.  For example, in Portland it seems as though whole villages emigrated and then intermarried, so that everyone of Irish descent is related.  Only DNA testing can sort out the complex relationships.  Also, many emigrants who came through Canada passed through and often settled in Maine, so we connect to Irish all over the country by Y-DNA, MT-DNA and Family Finder tests.
