About us

"Neither an invading Gael nor Saxon be but a true born Briton proud and free."

The origin of the clans of Lennox, Macfarlane, and Leckie is to be found in the dynasty of the mormaers (later earls) of Lennox, a remnant of the kingdom of Strathclyde.  Clan Lennox stems from an illegitimate son of the 8th Earl of Lennox.  The 2nd Earl of Lennox had younger sons who were respectfully progenitors of Clan Macfarlane and Clan Leckie.  Gilchrist the son from whom sprang the barons of Arrochar who later became the chiefs of clan Macfarlane in the person of his great-grandson, Parlan, who became the name-founder of the clan. From his son, Malcolm, onwards the surname MacFarlane became fixed. There are instances of a cadet taking his father's Christian name as surname, such as MacAllan (son of Allan MacFarlane) and Thomson or Thomason (son of Thomas MacFarlane). Many of the rank and file of the clan took other names designating their vocation, such as Stalker and Miller, while others adopted names from motives of prudence when the clan came into conflict with the authorities. As a result clan Macfarlane has many associated Sept surnames and some bearing these names were originally Macfarlanes. From the ancestral lands of Arrochar the Macfarlanes spread throughout the Highlands and to Northern Ireland. Today Macfarlanes are found around the world.

Witnessed many of his brother's charters between 1217 and 1250; if he lived beyond the latter year he may not have survived the Norse invasion of the Scottish mainland in 1263 which devastated Arrochar and Loch Lomondside, but in any case he died previous to a charter being granted to his heir sometime before 1284. Married an heiress from the Lothians whose lands he exchanged with the king for those of Glenfalloch and Glendochart. They had, with a youngest son GilleCriosd/Gilchrist, an eldest son:

Parlan de Arrochar, 4th Baron. Name in Gaelic: Pharlan MacMaoldomhnaich. From Parlan the clan took its name therefore he is reckoned to be the first Chief of Clan MacFarlane. Born circa 1290; died before 4 May 1354. Like his father, as a cadet of the House of Lennox he would have fought under the command of his first cousin once removed MaelColuim/Malcolm, 5th Earl of Lennox (see HOUSE of LENNOX above), during the War of Independence including at Bannockburn in 1314 and at Halidon Hill where the latter was killed on 19 July 1333. The charters to the first and second barons were confirmed under the Great Seal of King James I. on 13 February 1420 (Old Style) during the regency of his fifth cousin Murdac, 2nd Duke of Albany (not that of his father Robert, 1st Duke of Albany, who died on 2 September 1420). Granted a liferent, in 1395, of the lands of Kenlochlong, Inveriock, Glenluin, and Portcable (probably at the time of their wedding) to his fourth cousin once removed Christian Campbell of Lochawe, daughter of Sir Colin Campbell of Lochawe, 3rd Baron. They had an eldest son:

Iain/John MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 4th Chief & 7th Baron. Born circa 1396; died before 18 January 1441 (Old Style). Married first to the only daughter of James, 2nd Lord Livingston. They had an elder son:

Andrew MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 7th Chief & 10th Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1460; witnessed a charter for his fourth cousin John, 10th Earl of Lennox on 17 September 1490; also witnessed a charter to the burgh of Dumbarton in 1493. Married his fourth cousin once removed Lady Barbara Stuart, daughter of John, 10th Earl of Lennox. Earl John’s succession as Heir of line to Lennox took many years and required heavy payments to his rivals, in light of which he would have wanted to secure the support of Andrew, the Heir-male of the earldom, by way of this marriage. They had a son:

Sir Iain/John MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 8th Chief & 11th Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1480; killed at Flodden on 9 September 1513. Knighted by his fifth cousin King James IV., and died with him and many others including his division commander who was both his uncle and his late first wife’s brother-in-law Matthew, 11th Earl of Lennox. Sir Iain/John married thrice. Called “Anndra am fhiosrachair” Andrew the Wizard from his use of magic tricks which he picked up whilst a student in Rome he is reputed to have composed the clan Pibroch Thogail nam Bo; resigned his barony into the hands of his first cousin once removed Matthew, 13th Earl of Lennox, for regrant to his elder son on 17 July 1543. Married his fifth cousin Lady Margaret Cunningham, daughter of Cuthbert, 3rd Earl of Glencairn. They had an elder son:

Donnchad/Duncan MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 10th Chief & 13th Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1520; killed at Pinkie Cleugh on 10 September 1547. Invested in Arrochar on 17 July 1543 by his second cousin Matthew, 13th Earl of Lennox (later Regent of Scotland for his grandson King James VI.), served under him in mid-1544 when he led three hundred of his clansmen at the battle of Glasgow Muir for Earl Matthew and his ally William, 4th Earl of Glencairn, who was Duncan's maternal uncle, against his first cousin once removed James, 1st Duke of Chatellerault, Regent of Scotland; later that same year (21 December 1544) he was charged, with his father and uncles, before the Privy Council for attacking Rossdhu with twice that many men. Married twice, with his second wife, his first cousin twice removed, Katherine/Anne Colquhoun of Luss, daughter of Sir John Colquhoun of Luss, 11th& 13th Baron and his wife Lady Elizabeth/Margaret Stuart, Lady Luss, daughter, in turn, of John, 10th Earl of Lennox, he had an elder son:

Andrew MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 11th Chief & 14th Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1544; died in 1612. Led a force of some hundreds of his clansmen at the battle of Langside, on 13 May 1568, which broke the flank of Queen Mary’s army and gave the victory to her half-brother James, 1st Earl of Moray, the Regent. For this action in defense of his third cousin once removed King James VI.’s Crown he received a grant of a crest to his Arms along with the motto This I'll Defend. He built the castle on Eilean-a-vow in 1577 and played host to King James VI. Married his sixth cousin twice removed Agnes Maxwell of Newark, daughter of Sir Patrick Maxwell of Newark, 5th Baron. They had a second but eldest surviving son:

Iain/John MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 12th Chief & 15th Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1566; died after 1645. Bailie to Ludovic, 2nd Duke of Lennox. A"cavalier" in the civil wars, he fought under James, 1st Marquess ofMontrose, during his whirlwind campaign of 1644-45. As a result his estate was attacked, Inveruglas Castle was destroyed, and he was heavily fined by the Cromwellians. He survived to see the restoration of the king for whom he had sacrificed so much and received a confirmation of his Arms with the addition of the slogan Loch Sloy. Married his sixth cousin twice removed Margaret Sempill of Beltries, a daughter of Sir James Sempill of Beltries, 2nd Baron. They had an eldest son:

Iain/John MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 14th Chief & 17th Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1618; died before 25 February 1679. A “cavalier” like his father. Married twice without male issue, therefore succeeded by his younger brother:

Andrew MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar & Ardess, 15th Chief &18th & 1st Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1620; died 8 July 1709. Received the barony of Ardess on the east side of Loch Lomond (matriculating Arms at the Court of the Lord Lyon as MacFarlane of Ardess in 1672 differencing both the Arms and their crest from those of his elder brother who was then chief). A “cavalier” in the tradition of his House, soon after his succession occurred the battle of Bothwell Brig, on 22 June1679, where the Covenanters were broken with the storming of the gate by his sixth cousin once removed James, 1st Duke of Monmouth & Buccleuch, who led the victorious charge of the Foot Guards supported by General Thomas Dalyell at the head of a detachment of Macfarlanes. Married twice, with issue by both wives. With his second wife Jean Campbell of Strachur, daughter of Lt-Col.Colin Campbell of Strachur, 13th Baron, he had younger sons Capt. With his first wife, his eleventh cousin, Elizabeth/Alison Buchanan of Ross, eldest daughter of John Buchanan of Ross, 2nd Baron he had an eldest son:

Col. John MacFarlane, Younger of that Ilk and Fiar of Arrochar & Ardess. Born circa 1664; died 13 May 1705. Built a new mansion at Inverioch in 1697 which became the family's seat. Unfortunately for the family he was an investor in the Darien Company. Married twice, with his second wife, his seventh cousin, The Hon. Helen Arbuthnott, fifth daughter of Robert, 2nd Viscount of Arbuthnott, he had an eldest surviving son:

Walter MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 16th Chief & 19th Baron, LL.D., Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1698; died 5 April 1767 at Canongate in Edinburgh. Admitted burgess in Glasgow (8 July 1723), honourary burgess in St. Andrews (1 September 1760), and probably burgess in Rutherglen (1 August 1723). The most respected genealogist of his time the University of Glasgow conferred an honourary degree of Doctor of Laws on him (25 January 1756) for his great knowledge of Scottish antiquities. He is said to have declined nomination to the post of Lord Lyon King of Arms. When he matriculated his Arms at the Court of the Lord Lyon (2 March 1750) he had the destination changed from heirs male to his heirs (which includes heirs female). By doing so he opened up to the succession to daughters upon the failure of sons. This came to pass with the death of his twice-great-grandnephew William in 1866 (see below). Married late in life without issue, therefore succeeded by his younger brother:

William MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 17th Chief & 20th Baron, M.D., Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born circa 1701; died in April 1791 at Bredisholme in Lanarkshire. Admitted burgess in Glasgow (8 July 1723) and burgess in Rutherglen (1 August 1723). Studied at the University of Leyden, in Holland, and graduated M.D. from the University of Rheims, in France (1725), and again from St. Andrews University (1727); also a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians (Fellow, 1768), Edinburgh, where he was in practice, and was admitted burgess there (16 September 1732). Unfortunately he became so mired in debt that even the selling of his Large Island estate on Jamaica could not clear it so he was forced to sell the lands of the barony of Arrochar to satisfy his creditors on 7 July 1784. Married Christian Dewar of Vogrie, only daughter of James Dewar of Vogrie, 1st Baron. They had an eldest son:

John MacFarlane, Younger of that Ilk & Fiar of Arrochar. Born circa 1730; died 21 May 1782 at Brompton in London. Married Catherine Walkinshaw of Walkinshaw, daughter of James Walkinshaw of that Ilk and his wife Margaret Walkinshaw of Barrowfield & Camlachie whose sister Clementina Walkinshaw of Barrowfield & Camlachie, later Gräfin von Alberstrof, was the paramour of H.R.H. Charles, Prince of Wales (later de jure King Charles III.). They had an elder son:

William MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 18th Chief & 21st Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born (an elder twin) 29 May 1770 at Hermiston in Salton Parish, East Lothian; died circa 1820; had a son:

Walter MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 19th Chief & 22nd Baron, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born in 1792; died in 1830, had, with a daughter, a son:

William MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar, 20th Chief & 23rd Baron of Arrochar, Heir-male of the ancient earldom of Lennox. Born in 1813; died in 1866. He never married, therefore the change in destination came into effect under the 1750 matriculation (mentioned above) and the succession opened to his sister:

Jane Watt MacFarlane of MacFarlane & Arrochar, The Maid of Arrochar, Heiress of Line. Born in 1817 at what shortly thereafter became Peterborough in the Eastern District of the Upper Canada Colony in British North America (now Peterborough, Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada); died 21 October 1887 at 7 Merton Street in South Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, County Durham. Her brother’s death brought into effect the change in destination from the 1750 matriculation and the way was then open for her to matriculate her Arms in the Court of the Lord Lyon King of Arms and be recognized by The Crown as the twenty-first chief. That she did not do so before her own death does not in anyway cut off her descendants from the right of succession. Therefore, her Senior Representative has the first right to the succession to the chiefship of Clan MacFarlane and the barony of Arrochar. To do so they shall have to prove their descent and matriculate the Name and Arms of MacFarlane of that Ilk & Arrochar in the Court of the Lord Lyon King of Arms. Married (25 June 1839, Saltcoats, Stevenston Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland) James Scott, an architect and son of William Scott and his wife Mary Galbraith, daughter of James Galbraith and his wife Margaret Crichton. They had a second but eldest surviving son:

James Galbraith Scott, Heir of Line. Born 11 March 1850 at West Kilbride in Ayrshire; died 29 March 1916 at West Sunderland in County Durham. Married (18 November 1879, Kyleshill, Stevenston Parish, Ayrshire) Janet Dunlop Craig, daughter of Capt. John Dunlop Craig and his wife Margaret Kerr. They had an eldest son:
