Kauffman/Coffman Project- Background

Background

The Kauffman surname is German/Swiss in origin and includes the variations Kauffman, Kaufmann, Coffman, Koffman and Caufman. One of the better-researched Kauffman group of families are the Amish-Mennonite Kauffmans who emigrated to America from their native Switzerland in the early 1700's. This group includes the family of Isaac Kauffman, who was exiled from Switzerland for his Amish beliefs.

Other Kauffman families originated in Germany, Austria and even the Alsace-Lorraine area of France.

Project participants are encouraged to upgrade their results to 37 markers to facilitate appropriate clustering of the results.

Project particpants should fill in their most distantly documented ancestor name and location. This data is useful for other researchers looking at your results.

The project is open to all Kauffman's - of whatever spelling - to facilitate their genealogical research efforts.
