Project Background:
This is a Y-DNA project to investigate the genetic orgins and family history of the people who lived in the five Hungarian villages of Bukovina (Andrásfalva, Hadikfalva, Istensegíts, Fogadjisten, and Józseffalva).

The villages were founded in the 1780's by Hungarian-speaking settlers after Austria acquired Bukovina from the Ottoman Empire. The majority of the settlers were Roman Catholic Székely from Transylvania, especially from the counties of Csík and Háromszék.

A smaller number were Calvinists, who settled mainly in Andrásfalva. Some have been traced back to Szatmár-Németi and Nagybanya, and others to Maros County.

Over the years, some people of other ethnic groups were absorbed into the village populations (predominately ethnic Germans, but also a few Romanians, Gypsies, Ukrainians, Poles, and Ruthenes).

Between 1905 and 1914, about 600 people from the five villages emigrated to Saskatchewan, where they homesteaded and founded the village of Arbury (Székelyföld) near Punnichy, northeast of Regina.

In 1941, the Hungarian residents of all five villages left Bukovina. Most were eventually resettled in Tolna and Baranya counties in Hungary, where many of them still live today.

Note: In the Hungarian language, DNA translates as DNS.

This project traces members of a group of people bearing particular surnames. Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, this test is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father’s Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way of marriage, so the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father’s father’s father’s…) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with this surname order a Y-DNA test.

Project Goals:
We hope to eventually test 110 different surnames(which will cover about 70% of the Bukovina Szekely population).

Please contact the Project Administrator if you are able to make a contribution to this project, as we badly need funds to continue testing subjects in Romania and Hungary.

The DNA findings supplement an 80,000+ person database which was created over a period of nine years by László Rudolf of Bátaszék, Hungary, and Beth Long, who now lives in Budapest. They extracted 150+ years of Bukovina and other parish records, such as those of Déva,Csernakeresztúr, Sztrigyszentgyörgy, Marosludas, and Gyorok in Romania, Sándoregyháza, Székelykeve, and Hertelendyfalva in Serbia, and Arbury (Székelyföld), Saskatchewan.

Because of this project, most Bukovina Hungarian family trees can be traced back to the 1780's, when the five villages were founded, and some even further back, to Transylvania. We hope that through DNA, links to people living today in Transylvania can be found, and that we will also contribute to the study of the ancient origins of the Székely and Hungarian people.

Here are the surnames found on the earliest Census (1569)of Csík, Gyergyó and Kázson. They give a good sample of what are considered "typical" Székely surnames. Where we have DNA samples within the project, the Y-DNA haplotype(s)are noted:

Project News:
The 2008 Bukovina Székley Festival will be held June 21, 2008 in Tevel (Tolna County) Hungary. If you are interestied in attending, please contact Beth for more information.

As of May 5, 2008, we have 111 results, and 2 more "in the works".
Please consider a donation to this project to assist in testing those in Romania and Hungary who would like to participate, but can't afford to do so. Contributions can be made via the project general fund or by contacting the project administrator.

Special goal for 2008 is the testing of the remaining surnames of Bukovina Szekely who emigrated to Canada. These are:

Albert
Benko
Borbandi
Csernik
Dobondi
Falukozi
Galambos
Jakab
Kelemen
Kovacs
Lovasz
Miklos
Nyisztor
Ollinger
Orban
Papp
Pek (Paik)
Santha
Sipos
Smid
Szabo
Szocs (Szucs)
Tamas
Tusa
Urszulyan (Ursulan)
Vancsa (Vancha)

If you are one (or know one), please help us recruit them for the project:-)

On August 19, 2007, we held a very successful meeting of Bukovina Szekely descendants in Regina, Saskatchewan (about 50 people attended, and fourteen new project members were tested).

We have found eight matches between Bukovina descendants and like-surnamed men in Transylvania. We've also determined that two different Bukovina Sebestyén families have the same ancestor in recent history (this connection was established through DNA evidence since it predates the "paper trail")

Beth is planning another Transylvania archive trip (probably in June) to work on the Transylvanian end of the "paper trail".

If you have a Bukovina surname you would like tested either in Transylvania or Hungary, I will do my best (you will need to reimburse me only for the cost of the kit itself).

László Rudolf has nearly completed his "family book" of Józseffalva, and it will be going to press in April. László hopes to follow this with volumes on each of the other villages as well. Probably Andrásfalva will be next).

DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members

* Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider ordering a SNP confirmation test.
