Background
Hulseberg is a rare name, both in the USA, and in Germany, where itoriginated. It is possible that all Hulsebergs in the World todaydescend from a single Hulseberg ancestor who lived in Germany centuriesago. One of the goals of the Hulseberg DNA Project is to find outwhether this is true.
DNA testing has recently become very popular as a tool forgenealogists. This new field is called genetic genealogy. Geneticgenealogy is useful both to prove connections between families that aresuspected to be related, and to determine ancient ancestry, i.e., whereour ancestors lived thousands of years ago.
The Hulseberg DNA Project tests non-coding regions (junk DNA)on the Y chromosome, the chromosome that is passed from father to son. These tests do not test any genes, or anything that might have medicalimplications. These are different kinds of tests than paternity tests, and cannot be used to prove paternity. The identity of projectparticipants is kept strictly confidential. For more about geneticgenealogy, please see:http://www.ftdna.com/(jziyny3tud4scy45vpbecf45)/tutorial_A.html
One Hulseberg has had his Y chromosome tested by a lab inGermany. His results have been transferred to the Hulseberg DNA Projecthere at Family Tree DNA. His results were very interesting. His Ychromosome belongs to a group known as J2a1k. This group is rare inEurope. Its concentration is highest in Italy and Greece, although itisn't common there. The ancient Romans had military garrisons inGermany. It is known that some of the Roman soldiers married localgirls and settled down there. It is possible that the Hulsebergsdescend from an ancient Roman legionnaire. DNA testing may eventuallyprove or disprove it.
We are looking for more male Hulsebergs from differentHulseberg lines to be tested. Please contact the Project Administratorif you are interested or have questions.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a commonsurname. Since surnames are passed down from father to son like theY-chromosome, this test is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females donot carry their father's Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way ofmarriage, so the tested individual mustbe a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father'sfather's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test.Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have amale relative with this surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can alsoorder an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNA or the mtDNAPlustest and participate in an mtDNA project.
