Project Background
Otherdays.com has done a surname distribution study in Ireland. They based their study on Griffith's Valuation (1847-1864) and found only 282 (head of household) Hands in Ireland. They were in 22 of the 32 counties of Ireland and were heavily concentrated in 6 of these 22. Monaghan (21%),Meath (20%),Dublin (17%),Louth (12%),Roscommon (6%)and Cavan (7%). My great Grandfather came from Co.Monaghan (emigrated 1865). His 2 older brothers came earlier, 1851 and 1852.
