Gillespie Surname DNA Project

CLAN MACPHERSON:
The GILLESPIE surname is included in CLAN MACPHERSON as an ASSOCIATED SURNAME. CLAN MACPHERSON does not have SEPTS which indicate a genetically related surname.
Results of this project have shown that test participants represent many unrelated Gillespie lines that can trace their families back into the early 1700s. There are also some Gillespie lines in this project that closely match other surnames indicating a surname switch at some point. Although there apparently was a Gillespie family many years ago that associated with Clan Macpherson and likely prompted their inclusion within Clan MacPherson by the Lord Lyon, that family has not been identified in the present day by this project or historians for Clan MacPherson. DNA testing in the Macpherson DNA Project has shown a clear CORE within haplogroup R1b L21>L1335?L1065 closely matching the "Scots Modal Haplotype." No genetic connection between the Y-DNA Macpherson lines (R1b L21 CORE or otherwise) and the Y-DNA Gillespie lines has been found. Gillespies are not genetic Macphersons along the direct male lines.
Although there are many Gillespies that have joined Clan Macpherson in North American, that is not the case in Scotland.
