The Gillespie DNA Surname Project began in November 2004. The first DNA test kit was received by FTDNA in December 2004.

Documented descendants of these Gillespie families are needed for testing:

* Gillespies who lived in Lancaster Co. PA and Prince Edward Co. VA and married into the Ewing family.

* Joseph Gillespie of Coddle Creek Church

* Col. Daniel Gillespie of VA

* Thomas Gillespie and wife Eleanor of VA

* Rev. George Gillespie lines of Scotland with proven lineage

Re: Thomas and Eleanor: According to Lyman Chalkely, in his Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Va., Vol 3. p 188, Thomas Gillespie's will dated June 1 1785, Proved June 15, 1790, he names the following:

Wife Eleanor, eldest son, John; sons Thomas, Jacob, Samuel, dtr, Mary Donally, dtr. Hannah Jones dtr, Jene ___; youngest dtrs, Eleanor and Ann, youngest sons, James and William the tract on Stuarts's Creek, of the Cowpasture River.

Executors: sons James and William and wife Eleanor. Witnesses: William Connell, Zachariah Beall, Leavin Nealls, Andrew McCasling.

A codicil was added in November 1786: $15 [pounds sterling] to be taken from Eleanor [his dtr?] and given to her son Thomas, a boy 3-4years old for his schooling. And if James shall die without issue, then his part of land to go to William.

When it was proved in 1790, William [his son] and Eleanor [his widow] were "the surviving executors." [meaning probably that James had died?]

The GILLESPIE SURNAME DNA PROJECT is especially interested in finding documented male Gillespie descendants from the following line:

Rev. GEORGE GILLESPIE, b. 1683 was a Presbyterian minister at White Clay Creek and Head of Christiana Church. His wife was REBECCA ALLISON. The parents of Rev. GEORGE b. 1683 were Rev. GEORGE GILLESPIE b. 1644 in Scotland and wife ANN GARNER. His grandparents were Rev. GEORGE GILLESPIE b. Jan. 21, 1612/13 in Scotland, http://www.electricscotland.com/history/other/gillespie_george.htm and wife MARGARET MURRAY.
