Gallman families were in Union County, SC by the early 1800s. They were in SC before the Revolutionary War. Some believe they came from Switzerland.Early census records suggest that most Gallmans in the US descend from the Gallmans in South Carolina.

The surname has generally been spelled Gallman but records of Galman,Gaulman, Gahlman and other variations have been seen.
