Surname DNA testing is the the best "add-on" tool available to genealogists!  The many advantages include:

  • Surname tests (Y-DNA) enable genealogists to verify their father's father's...father's paternal ancestry.  The genetic ancestry overrides the surname ancestry.
  • Molecular ancestry information can be very powerful when combined with traditional paper trails and can uncover family mysteries

This project is for any male located anywhere in the world with the surname of GESSERT. This surname is primarily found in the United Sates and Germany, but all Gesserts in all parts of the world are encouraged to join this project since this surname is fairly uncommon.

Like all surname projects, this one is intent upon proving connections using DNA, which means it is NOT just surname ancestry.  It is genetic (molecular) ancestry.

The best articles I have found to date for understanding just what 'DNA' is, and specifically yDNA and how the results of testing can help you with your genealogy, are listed below.

Start with this overview of the various types of genetic testing for genealogical purposes - the absolute basics. e sure to view the section under Animations for a every clear and simple overview of the various DNA tests

Then branch out and start on these.

If you are reading this, then it is assumed you are hunting for details about your GESSERT ancestors and extending your knowledge about your particular line.

DNA testing will certainly aid you in a number of ways but you must still have a paper trail if you want to name that ancestor when you find you have a match!  Please also make use of the options on your FTDNA Home page; your 'myFamily' (which is where you load your gedcom) or you manually insert your family tree - person by person.

DNA testing will also inform you whether your paper trail is correct.  Do not simply rely on the work of someone else UNLESS they have supplied you with references to enable you to check these for yourself.  In addition, it is suggested that all males should test both the 'Family Finder' test (autosomal DNA aka atDNA) and at least 67 markers of their yDNA (yDNA67).  Some folks can get away with only Y-37, but this is usually inconclusive. Luckily, FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) will store the unused DNA sample you provide should you wish to upgrade later.
