Project Background:

The Fulghum/Fulgham/Foljambe DNA Project began in early 2003. It appears this is the first endeavor of its kind for this family. The Fulghum/Fulgham/Foljambe family has a very cautious and conservative streak, so growth of the project has been rather slow. I think it is important for us, however, to know the details of our past and to utilize all technology that is available to assist us in this endeavor. DNA testing should be thought of as a tool to help us in our genealogy quest and not as something to fear.

Project Goals:

My name is Dan Fulghum and I live near Houston, Texas. My ultimate goal is to prove the links between the Fulghum, Fulgham, and Foljambe lines of the family. Foljambe is thought to be the name of our line prior to its' arrival in the colonies. This hypothesis has been somewhat accepted, but never proven. Captain Anthony Fulgham is considered the Patriarch of the family in this country having settled in the Isle of Wight County, Virginia, circa 1640. Once the family migrated to North Carolina, some branches of the family altered the spelling of the name from Fulgham to Fulghum.

Project News:

My name is Dan Fulghum, I'm the DNA Project Administrator and I'm the Assistant Archivist for the Fulgham/Fulghum Family National Association. We are holding our reunion this year (2006) in Nacogdoches, Texas, at the Fredonia Hotel, on Friday and Saturday June 23 and 24. Hotel reservations can be made by calling 1 800-594-5323. This is a special invitation to Fulgham/Fulghum descendents, as well as any unrelated but interested parties. We are getting our agenda together and plan to present some information on the Fulgham/Fulghum families in Texas.

During the summer of 2004, I was advised of a new Y-DNA match with a gentleman named Laurenson whose family comes from the Shetland Islands. It appears that our most common ancestor must have lived in the kindom of Denmark sometime prior to 1000 A.D.

Project Results:

We have been successful in achieving six Fulgham/Fulghum matches since the inception of the project. After obtaining my test results, I was contacted by Leslie Leo Fulgham. He had learned of the project at the 2003 Fulgham/Fulghum Family National Association Reunion. Leslie is a Fulgham and I am a Fulghum. Our family lines both settled in the Republic of Texas in 1839 (Nacogdoches and Tyler). Tests results for the two of us indicated an exact match. Leslie and I have documentation indicating that our most recent common ancestor was Captain Anthony Fulgham of the Isle of Wight County, Virginia, circa 1640. In December 2004, Philip Anthony Fulghum joined and was a 12-marker match. In February 2005, Robert S. Fulghum joined and was a 12-marker match. In March 2005, James N. Fulgham joined and was a 12-marker match. Finally, in August 2005, Raymond L. Fulgham joined the project and we had our first 24-marker match. As with Leslie Fulgham, all six matches can connect with Captain Anthony Fulgham. Philip, Robert and I, however, are more recently connected through ties in North Carolina in the 1700s.
