Project Background

(Updated 1/20/10)

The Freed Surname project was initiated in August 2004 as an outgrowth of (1) the project administrator's finding several brick walls in researching his own Freed genealogy, (2) finding suggested relationships on web sites that have no documentation and (3) being fascinated with all the expected different origins and backgrounds of the Freed surname (of various spellings) and wishing that a DNA study could aid all Freed genealogists in finding ancestral connections.

NOTE 1: If you have reached this page via Google or other web search engines, and have found family information of value to your research and would like to contact individuals associated with this new genealogy information, please send the appropriate information to the administrator (email address above), and he will forward the question or information on to the person to whom your message is addressed.

NOTE 2. If the print size is not large enough to see clearly, click on the large A in the upper right hand corner of this webpage. TO SEE FURTHER PAGES OF THIS WEBSITE, CLICK ON THE APPROPRIATE SECTION AT THE LEFT OF THIS WEBPAGE. THE “RESULTS” SECTION DISCUSSES THE TABLES OF RESULTS SHOWN IN THE "Y-DNA RESULTS" SECTION AND THE “MtDNA RESULTS” SECTION.

If you are a male with the surname of Freed, Fried, Friedt, Fread, etc., and wish to join this surname DNA project (or if you are organizing a DNA test for a male with these "Freed-related surnames", or if your surname is NOT Freed, or variations thereof, but you expect that your straight line male ancestry DOES include a Freed male), click on "REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP" at the left side of this page and follow the directions. If you have questions about these directions, contact the group administrator.

If you have questions about DNA testing (Benefits? Procedures?, etc.), two options are available: (1) Click on the FAQ (frequently asked questions) link at the left side of this page. (2) Alternatively, click on "REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP" at the left side of this page. On the new page, without “logging in”, click on “Order Your Test Now”. On the next page search for "Genetic Genealogy Tutorials" (lower right corner), and click on the appropriate link to read information on genetic genealogy.

If you are searching for a DNA testing company and would like to know why the Freed surname DNA project is located at FTDNA, go to the following website:
http://www.dna-testing-adviser.com/FamilyTreeDNA.html

If you would like to contribute funds for either general support of the Freed (and similar names) DNA testing, OR for a specific family member to be tested, click on the "CONTRIBUTE TO THE SURNAME PROJECT GENERAL FUND link at the left side of this page. If your choice is to contribute to the expenses for the testing of a specific individual, first contact the Freed group administrator by clicking on his email address at the top of this page.

PRICES for participation in the Freed Surname DNA Project: Participating in a group DNA project produces remarkable savings as compared to ordering as an individual without participation in a group project. The prices are given for the following number of markers studied, followed by the price (in parentheses) if one does NOT belong to a specific group project:
12 markers, $99 ($119)
37 markers, $149 ($169)
67 markers, $248 ($268)
Note that a $4 postage charge is added to each amount given.

If one starts with a low number of markers and wishes to upgrade to more markers (without sending in another sample), the prices are as follows:
from 12 to 25, $49......... from 12 to 37, $99
from 12 to 67, $189....... from 25 to 37, $49
from 25 to 67, $148....... from 37 to 67, $99
These prices are correct as of August 2009. Prices are infrequently reduced for a short time interval and these reductions will be shared on this site.

FOR THOSE MEN WHO HAVE ALREADY BEEN TESTED BY ANOTHER MAJOR DNA TESTING COMPANY, the FTDNA Company has announced significant price reductions for testing with FTDNA as shown for the following markers: 12, $59; 25, $89; 37, $119; 67, $208. For details, go to the following website:
http://www.familytreedna.com/PDF/PROMO_GAP.pdf

The Freed project administrator does NOT recommend starting with only 12 markers, as too many matches often result that are found to be not significant at the 37 or 67 marker levels. If a participant can show a "paper trail" to a colonial (prior to 1776) Freed-named male ancestor, funds are available from the Freed Project General Fund to assist in this DNA Project. $50 credit will be applied to either a 37 marker or a 67 marker study, making the price for the 37 marker equivalent to the price of the 12 marker study. Contact the project administrator for details.
