About us

Welcome to the Fitzhugh (and variant spellings) DNA Project. My name is Charleen Oerding, and I have been gathering Fitzhugh data for about 15 years. As a result I have found several major family groups with Fitzhugh (and variant spellings) surnames, but no records, as yet, have been located to connect these families. With the hopes that DNA testing will assist in crumbling our brick walls, I am excited to be your administrator for this project and urge you to join me in solving our surname dilemma. As only males with the surname of Fitzhugh (and variant spellings) can be tested, please consider volunteering or if you aren't male and/or don't carry the surname, assist in locating possible candidates to test. I recommend that anyone wishing to test to consider a 37 marker as this provides a more accurate match. In order to find DNA matches, a tester needs to allow his DNA to be available to the public. If you select to have your results made public your results will be linked to http://www.yseearch.org to allow for match with other testing companies. Either the tester or the project administrator may link the data with Ysearch. I have started a Fitzhugh DNA email list that will disseminate information on the lineages being tested and on various DNA topics as they relate to genealogy. You do not have to be a volunteer for testing to be part of the Fitzhugh DNA email list. Email me at hotomy@hevanet.com if you would like to be included in this e-list so those not interested will not be bothered by further emails.
