We have now confirmed the Y-STR12 DNA results of Peter Finger "the Pioneer". (There is one marker, 385b, known to have a high mutation rate, that is different by one count.) Peter Finger is Haplogroup R1b1b2 (M269+) according to Family Tree DNA, and R1b1c (M269) according to the Genographic Project. The difference lies in how you define the sub-haplogroups. Both organizations agree that Peter Finger has mutation M269.
Which of the two results is exactly the haplotype of Peter Finger? We cannot be absolutely certain, but most likely it is the one with the lower count for 385b. That's because markers are slightly more likely to increase than decrease. (Otherwise, all markers would disappear with time.)
Other Finger families have been tested with other laboratories, and their results indicate Samuel Finger, born before 1568 in Muenden, is Haplogroup R1b, and Johannes Finger, born c. 1700 in Palatinate, is Haplogroup I1a.
So now we have three distinct Finger families that are probably not related in the last 750-1000 years (the general time of adoption of surnames in western Europe).
