Project Background: The ENGLISH / INGLISH (and variations) Y-DNA project was launched in October 2004 by project administrators Georgia Kinney Bopp & Barbara English West to provide researchers with the resource of DNA testing with the objective to identify others with the surname ENGLISH (ENGLIS, INGLISH, INGLIS or variations) who are related.
We can, through DNA testing of male family members:
- Determine if two people are related.
- Determine if two people descend from the same common ancestor.
- Determine if we are related to others who share our surname.
- Provide clues about ethnic origin.
- DNA testing can prove, or disprove, your family tree research.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: We are seeking to:
1) Find new relationships for those who have reached a brick wall in their genealogical paper trail.
2) Prove or disprove suspected relationships to other ENGLISH (ENGLIS, INGLISH, INGLIS or variations) lines.
3) Determine the countries of origin of the many ENGLISH (ENGLIS, INGLISH, INGLIS or variations) lines.
4) Develop a database that combines DNA results with traditional genealogy research.
In order to participate in this Y-chromosome DNA testing project, you must be a male with the ENGLISH (ENGLIS, INGLISH, INGLIS or variations) surname, or have a male ENGLISH (ENGLIS, INGLISH, INGLIS or variations) from your line that will participate.

Family Tree DNA provides public web space to surname projects and with it we have some advantages.
RESULTS TABLE: an alternate results table that comes directly through FTDNA, members can view results as they come in.
MAP: We have the members ancestors mapped which a great visual reference.
GENERAL FUND: A link is available for anyone who would like to contribute to the general fund for future DNA testing within our project. This gives us a place to allow groups of people to come together and share the cost of testing. Let the project administrators know if you plan to direct your contribution toward a particular test.

Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Results: This project involves the Y-chromosome testing of males who share the surname ENGLISH (ENGLIS, INGLISH, INGLIS or variations.) By comparing test results to others with this surname it can be determined if you are related. The results do not tell you exactly how you are related but will indicate if you share a common ancestor with another participant.
OVERVIEW OF MATCHES/CONNECTIONS
updated: 25 June 2007
========== Group 1 ============
Group 1 shares an unknown common ancestor but is presented in three sections.
[1.1] - NC and/or GA Lines = Share paper trails: E-0008 and E-0016 to Mathew English (c.1755) and E-0002, E-0018 and E-0026 to Sampson J. English (1790) whose relationship is probably very, very close (first cousins?)
[1.2] - Alabama/Texas Line E-0001; this line is genetically closer to group 1.1 than to group 1.3.
[1.3] - NC and/or GA Lines = No shared paper trails but E-0005 (NC/GA) & E-0013 (NJ!) appear to be more closely related to each other than to those in 1.1.
========== Group 2 ============
Group 2 shares an unknown common ancestor.
Uncle and nephew have a match with the Clement English who is present very early (1646) Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.
<> E-0006, E-0007 are uncle and nephew, migration path County Antrium, Ireland to Ontario, Canada.
<> E-0023 is located in very early America, is in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts by 1646.
<> E-0028 moved between Co. Down Ireland > to Ayr Scotland > + to USA by 1885
========== Group 3 ============
Group 3 - "Niall of the Nine Hostages"
FTDNA reports a genetic distance of 6 (5 mismatches) at 37 markers for these two. They share a common ancestor but based on what is known at this time, the ancestor is probably very, very distant. Their results also match the proposed profile of the 5th-century warlord known as "Niall of the Nine Hostages" who established a dynasty of powerful chieftains that dominated the island for six centuries and may be the ancestor of one in 12 Irishmen.[see: http://www.familytreedna.com/matchniall.html]
========== Group 4 ============
Group 4 has no shared paper trail but it appears this line originated out of Scotland.
Includes surname Inglis and English – appears to be a surname spelling change over time for one line.
========== Group 5 ============
Group 5 has no shared paper trail
<> E-0003 traces back to c.1755, possibly Virginia USA
<> E-0030 traces back to c.1700 Maryland and Delaware USA
========== Group 6 ============
Group 6 has no shared paper trail
<> E-0027 traces to c.1754 Conn. USA and by 1775 in Washington Co. NY
<> E-0032 traces to 1807 Washington Co. NY
========== Group 7 ============
Group 7 -shared paper trail?
<> E-0035 remains in same geo location over time
<> E-0038 Lycoming PA to New York
========== Group Pending========
