Project Background

Duggan,Dugan,Doogan and other surname variants

Family name studies agree that the name Duggan(Duggan,Doogan) is Anglicized from of Gaelic O'Dubhagain 'descendant of Dughhahan' and means 'Dubh' black or dark.

We know those bearing the surnamea are found in all corners of the British Isles. The name is now found widely in all Irish provinces. However, the Dugan variant is most common in the province of Ulster. In County Donegal, it is Doogan. In the city of Dublin as well as the province of Munster, the Duggan variant is most prevalent. This also holds true for the majority County Cork, County Tipperary, and County Waterford.

The surname is now found widely over the globe, some on the Old Sod and many in other nations. Families were often divided as to where they immigrated due to marriage, opportunity and cheaper transportation opportunities.

Our surname group seeks to try to link these families by taking up where paper genealogy leaves off.
