About us

New visitors to this site should navigate this site with the drop down menu under "ABOUT THIS GROUP" above.  This is the Background Page, with information on the Goals Page and the News page.  On the News Page I will post three e-mails that are normally sent to new prospective participants that I find and contact.  One is an Introduction, the second is about what DNA testing is, why it works, and what it does and doesn't do, while the third covers how to order the test, what the test kit is like and factors that come up after the kit results are returned.  Under the Y-DNA RESULTS menu, you can choose Classic or Colorized (recommended) display formats for display of the participants Y-DNA results, grouped into related sub-groups.

Starting with testing in June 2009, and this Surname Group setup in Nov. 2009, this project was initiated with three male Y-37 participants who carry the Ditty Surname. Two distinct DNA lines had been identified by Nov. 2009. One is a traditional Northern Ireland source with members who's paper trail's have either stayed in Ireland or emigrated to the U.S. and Scotland. Initially we had two participants (now 4) for this line who are at a related GD=3 (34/37) from this Northern Ireland source and they are Haplogroup R1b1b2. All participants are at a GD=1 or 2 from a norm value set (called a Mode). Additionally there are paper trails for two U.S. immigrant lines that were originally surnamed DeDie in Switzerland and they assumed the Ditty surname as they arrived in the U.S. Initially we had one participant from one of these Swiss lines (now one from both) who are a Haplogroup I1.
Project Goals: From Project Goals Section. To identify how many different DNA lines are represented within the current Ditty population. Two apparent distinct name sources are 1) Northern Ireland Ditty's and 2) Switzerland Ditty's (DeDie). The Switzerland source is originally known as DeDie, and may be of Huguenot origin, originally from France. A Huguenot source (DeDie or otherwise) may have emigrated to Ireland during the period 1550 to 1695, or the the Irish source could be another source and/or a variation of another surname, such as DeWitte. Other potential name sources will be welcome.
Project Coordinator and Participants: From Project Goals Section. Your Ditty Surname Coordinator, is Richard J. Fletcher and is at e-mail FletcherRJ@aol.com or FletcherRJ4@aol.com. His wife is the daughter of Samuel Ditty (1907-1978) who descends from William Ditty who married Margaret Wilson in Cookstown N. Ireland in 1852, and lived in Co. Londonderry in Magherafelt N. Ireland for three children and then emigrated to Scotland where they had 6 more children. Her line is now represented by a nephew, Derek Samuel Ditty
Kit #155204 is Derek Samuel Ditty of Scotland (e-mail at derekditty@hotmail.co.uk). The results of Derek's kit should post by late December 2010.  This kit is scheduled for an upgrade to 67 markers and will eventually have a deep clade test.
Kit #157341 is from Patrick Scott Ditty, of Kingwood TX, who is a descendant of James Ditty b 1793 in Londonderry Co N. Ireland. James Ditty emigrated from Ireland to Clarion Co. PA. His e-mail is pat_ditty@yahoo.com
Kit #159391 is from Cary Ditty of Kansas, a descendant of Abraham Ditty (originally surnamed DeDie). His e-mail is laditty@sunflower.com, and he was sponsored by Bev Ditty, e-mail Beverlyvrg@aol.com. Cary is a 35/37 match to Dean Paul Ditty, a descendant of immigrant Johannes Ditty (DeDie)
Kit #160776 is from Robert James Ditty, Jr of CastleDawson, N. Ireland, who is a descendant of Robert John Ditty Sr., b. 1869 of Londonderry Co. N. Ireland. His e-mail is dittyscastledawson@gmail.com
Kit #181279 is from an elderly senior Mr. Ditty in the Florida Panhandle and he is represented by Mrs. Rhonda Watson, r_wats@knology.net . He descends from a James Ditty b. 1755/1760 and is in York Co. SC in the 1790 census. This is an Irish line with close relationship to the other three Irish Dittys.
Kit # 182813 is from James G. Ditty, Ph.D. (jim.ditty@noaa.gov), who is descended from John Ditty, born 1806 in Co. Londonderry, N. Ireland, marries Prescilla and emigrates from Ireland to the Wheeling WV area. This is an Irish line with close relationship to the other three Irish Dittys. James has also upgraded to 67 markers.
Kit # 183657 is from Dean Paul Ditty (DeanD@microboards.com), who descends from John Ditty, a grandson of Johannes Ditty (DeDie) who emigrated from Switzerland around 1760, to Dauphin Co. PA. After service in the Civil War, John migrated to Minnesota. With 37 markers reported, Dean is a 35/37 match to Cary Ditty, descendant of Abraham Ditty (DeDie). They are Haplogroup I1.
Kit # 184301 is from David Micah Ditty, and is sponsored by his niece Lori Disney (ldisney@roadrunner.com) and was thought to be a descendant from Johannes Ditty (DeDie) through his son Heinrich (Henry), to Elias to Issac to Jacob Elias to Stanley Matthew to James Stanley to David Micah Ditty. With 37 markers reported, David is not a match to any other participants. We may have found a new Ditty Irish DNA strain, or we might have an adoptive DNA entry within the Johannes line, for another Y-DNA line. David is a Haplogroup R1b1b2.
Kit # 196488 is from Lynn Emery Ditty (LDitty@ptd.net) is a descendant from Johannes Ditty (DeDie).  With 37 markers he shows close agreement with Cary Ditty (a descendant of Abraham Ditty (DeDie), and also with Dean Ditty, a Johannes Ditty descendant.  With three kits from these two colonial era DeDie families, we now have a best two out of three match situation on the markers.  This would look like it shows an slight GD=1 shift in both Cary's and Dean's lines.
