Project Background:

NOTE: Cofer is used generically to reference all spellings of Cofer.
Much research has been done on the Cofer family line with many researchers assuming they probably descended from John Cofer, the immigrant, who was transported to America by Nathaniel Pope in the mid 1600's. Several groups found they could not confirm a link to this line. This lead to a group of us to join DNA project to study our DNA.

Project Goals:

To establish a data bank of DNA information for all Cofer lines.
This can save much time in our searches by eliminating those whose DNA dos not come from our respective lines.

Project News:

Many are now upgrading to the 37 marker DNA to further differentiate our lines. We need to get others to participate.
Many with female Cofer ancestry have wanted to participate, but because the Y-Chromosome only passes to the male line, they cannot join directly. The best way for them to determine their Cofer ancestral line is to get a male Cofer surnamed cousin or uncle to join our project.
On another page of the website, you can observe the DNA profiles of those whose results have been posted.

Project Results:

To date, we have confirmed at least three and probably four lines of Cofers. We need to increase our data base in order to better define our lines.
