Project Background: As many of you will know DNA testing allows the male and female lines to be traced back over long periods. At the instigation of the Clan Chief Michael J.S. Egan we are undertaking the Clan Egan DNA Project as part of an attempt to bridge some of the major gaps in the documented genealogies particularly those occurring pre 1800.
The use of DNA in genealogical research is gathering momentum very quickly. As we are a family who had a major responsibility in documenting the law and history of old Ireland we are perhaps morally obliged to be part of the action. In the greater Europe names were often associated with trades e.g. Smith for blacksmith, Baker for baker etc. In Ireland however the Gaelic names were tied to families. This makes the prospect for our surname project very good indeed as Egan is a recognised ancient name of Ireland. |
Project Goals: | Our goal over the next two years is to increase the number of active participants to 100 and to ensure that all participants take or upgrade to the 25 marker test. Project membership currently stands at 73 active participants and growing, many of whom have had 25 marker tests. The professional advice we have received is that 25 is adequate, although some will wish to extend to a larger set of markers, particularly if they are trying to resolve the detail of branches in their particular part of the tree. |
Project News: May 2008 - More test kits will be available at the next Clan Rally in Ireland in June for selected participants, especially those from Ireland.
April 2008 - The project joined the Irish Heritage DNA Project
April 2008 - One participant Tom Agin wrote to us about his success and hopefully a sign of more to come:
“I was therefore very surprised when practically every one that matched me originated within or in close proximity to the Ferbane-Cloghan - Shannonbridge triangle which is only about 8 to 10 miles on a side.”
The interesting thing here is that Tom is an “Agin”, clearly Egan, whose family went to the USA in 1759 and who had no idea where in Ireland they originated. It is also important to note that some of those originating from Tom’s triangle are living in Australia while others are still living in Ireland.
July 2006 - Dr Bennett Greenspan of FTDNA was the invited keynote speaker for the 2006 Clan Egan Rally in Dallas. His infectious enthusiasm for family history studies through his own personal experiences was very welcome. We thank Bennett for his participation in what was a highly successful Rally. |
Project Results: Our preliminary analysis shows two major groupings with a number of smaller groups some of which fall between the two large groups potentially forming a mutation bridge some time ago.
In April 2008 we revisited the groupings excluding the most rapidly mutating markers (these are shown in red on the Y Results). In some cases it is a line call whether individuals are in a bridge or just in a major group so we have used our best (partially informed!) judgement.
In a relatively few cases it seems that some of us may have gained our name through our mother, or less likely, through adoption. In other cases the signatures appear to be solitary but close (several generations) to one or more of the groups. In this case we most likely do not have enough participants yet. Gratifyingly some have joined the project with derivatives of our name and shown a definite link e.g. Tom Agin, while others have not yet been able to show such a link. |
DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members * Haplogroups in green have been
confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have
been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the
individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease
and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for
ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then
we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the
kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider
ordering a SNP confirmation test.
