One record indicates that between Spain, and South and Latin America there are 1050 people with the surname Cienfuegos, with another 164 in North America and 20 in Germany. There are probably more; these numbers are based on public records. Some of the earliest records of people with this surname include a story of a man that received the name and another one that came to the Americas from Spain in 1513AD. We are almost positive the surname first appeared in Asturias, Spain. But there are very early records for this surname from elsewhere, including other locations in Spain, El Salvador, Hispaniola, and many other places. Some people with the surname that I have spoken to share a common idea that others with this surname may be related somehow. This may be be due to the fact that we know something about the history of the name, and who received the name, and the fact that the Spanish were great explorers of the world. Please consider joining this DNA project. It would greatly benefit all who share this surname and want to know more about our past. DNA test results should help us connect with some close relatives who share recent ancestry, and they will also tell us something about what genetic genealogists call our deep ancestry, the history of our ancient ancestors. Men can be sorted into groups called haplogroups based on their common descent from ancient ancestors, and we would like to learn about the haplogroups which include Cienfuegos families.
