Background

Welcome to the Cantwell / Kentwell DNA Project! We invite all Cantwell males to participate in DNA testing. Y-DNA testing is a tool available to genealogists. A section of the Y-chromosome is passed from father to son virtually unchanged except for a mutation about every 500 generations. Results of the Y-DNA test are expressed in a string of numbers called markers. Relationships are established by comparing the markers of the participants in a Y-DNA project. You can participate in multiple DNA projects. We recommend that you order one of the higher resolution Y-DNA tests: a 25-marker, 37-marker, or 59-marker test. If you would like to order the 12-marker test, you can always upgrade later to a 25, 37, or 59-marker test. To order an upgrade, go to your personal page and click on "tests" near the top of the page. When you place your order with Family Tree DNA, they mail you a genetic test kit. It's a very simple process, you take two scrappings of the inside of your cheek and store them in a collection tube, sign the release form, and return the kit by mail. The interval for the test results is seven weeks. FamilyTreeDNA provides a wealth of information; I urge you to learn more by clicking "FAQ about DNA testing & genealogy by genetics" in the panel on the left side of this page. To join our group and/or purchase a Y-DNA test kit, please click "REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP" .
