| Project Background: The Canton DNA Project welcomes Cantons from all around the world and we hope you will join today!
Our project started late in 2007, and we are delighted to have our first seven members signed up. See our test results so far further down this page, and please remember to check from time to time for updates.
Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will help with your family history research. We will also discover which family trees are related. As the project progresses, the results for the various family trees will provide information about the evolution of the surname.
The surnames in this DNA Project are also being researched as part of the Canton One-Name Study. Significant research and information about the surnames and the associated family trees can be found at:
http://www.one-name.org/profiles/canton.html
Informal information and updates are at
http://family-tree.co.uk/familyblogs/canton/ [Amended link]
The Y DNA test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time. You must be male to take this test, and you should have one of the surnames shown. If you believe there is a Canton or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, please help find a male in your family tree to participate.
We encourage males who order a Y DNA test to order 37 markers, if possible. If you order fewer markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more.
Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother's mother, and back in time. You would order a mtDNA test. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project News: 2008 Jun 24 - Far sooner than we thought, the first mtDNA result has arrived:
Kit #121844: Haplogroup H / HVR1 304C
2008 Jun 5 - We have acquired two more members in recent weeks, including one Y-DNA participant and one mtDNA participant. We look forward to receiving their results, probably next month.
2008 Apr 11 - We have 5 members of the Project and have just received the fourth set of results.
All participants so far have had Pembrokeshire (PEM) ancestry and, for the convenience of readers, they have been sorted into PEM A and PEM B - these two groups are not closely related, which means that not all Pembrokeshire Cantons have the same origin.
With regard to PEM A, all three participants have a common ancestor, though when he lived is yet to be firmly established. #107126 and #113261 are believed, through normal genealogical research, to be descended from Henry Canton who died in 1763, through his son John Canton of Coedcanlas, Martletwy, born 1730. Henry Canton is the 7th generation back from #107126 and the 6th generation back from #113261. The parish records of Martletwy and nearby parishes have many gaps, so the DNA results could be useful confirmatory evidence. There are two differences in 37 markers between these two, each being for a fast-mutating marker.
#107827 has been proved to be a relation of #107126 (varies by a single marker) and #113261 (varies by three markers). This does not mean that we can safely say he, too, is descended from the Martletwy family as other PEM lines may have similar DNA profiles - we badly need more people to take tests! (See below.)
Participant #5 has been sent a kit but it hasn't yet been received by the laboratory. His results are expected to throw more light on the above and are keenly awaited. If anyone would like a chart showing the relationships (simplified, and living people are anonymous) between those who have tested so far, please contact me (it would be sent as a .doc attachment).
WANTED - Participants with ancestors in the following areas, to take Y-DNA tests:
Manorbier, Freystrop (both PEM); Gloucestershire; London; Ireland.
Further interest from branches which have already been tested are also very welcome but - as it is pointless to test people who are *too* closely related - it's best to get in touch with me first. Contact details are elsewhere on this page.
We have also established a General Fund, to accept donations in any currency via credit card. These funds will be held at the testing company, and used to help sponsor test kits for key males who may otherwise be unable to participate. We encourage you to make a donation. To make a donation please click on the last link on the left, entitled "Contribute to the Surname Project General Fund". If you decide to donate, please specify "Canton Project General Fund" in the top box of the Donation form - if you wish, you may donate in someone's memory and/or specify the line it should apply to.
Applicants for tests who wish to apply for a discount from donations should contact the Administrator first, sending details of names, dates and places connected with the paternal main line. Priority is being given to the first people to test in a 'new' line.
We hope you will order your test kit TODAY!!! Click on the Join link on the top in the blue sidebar on the left, labelled "Request to Join this Group".
