Our format for "Project Results" includes for each participant:
(1) LINEAGE;
(2) DISCUSSION OF YDNA TEST RESULTS (WHEN AVAILABLE);
(3) DISCUSSION OF ANCIENT ETHNIC ORIGINS (WHEN AVAILABLE).

DETAILS:
(1)each participant's lineage from their most distant ancestor down to the participant, (name withheld), who will be identified only by his kit number. Any living member of his lineage will be un-named due to privacy reasons.
(2)discussion of any yDNA matches with other participants;
(3)discussion of our findings regarding their Haplogroup (ancient ethnic origins). Such results are the Group Administrator's best efforts from searches on the internet and are based upon DYS markers, so therefore are not 100% accurate. The test for proven Haplogroups costs an additional $65-$79 +, so this is our attempt to avoid such costs but at the same time give the participant an idea of his ancient ethnic origins.
From "DNA Heritage Masterclass2" is a brief outline of three major Haplogroups, one of which could be the ancient ethnic origins of any current and/or future participants of the Callen DNA testing project.
"Palaeolithic (old stone age) Europe 18,000 years ago was in the grip of the last ice age. Due to the cold and need for food, the human populations of the day waited the ice age out, living below the ice/tree line in three main locations: (1) Iberian Peninsula (2) Balkans (3) Ukraine. If you can imagine the "ice/tree" line, it began along the north side of Spain, then extended east along the north side of present day Mediterrean Sea, then continued east past the north line of Italy, on past the north line of the Black Sea, then continued east along the north side of the Baltics, then east past the Ukraine and continued east thru Asia. Above the line, nothing could live, the ice was several feet thick.

If we fast forward to 12,000 years ago, the three groups of humans had taken refuge for so long that their DNA had naturally picked up mutations, and consequently can be defined into different haplogroups. Currently there are 18 major Haplogroups which have been first assigned a capital alphabet letter, ranging from A thru R, then a number, then lower case alphabet. An example of one Haplogroup is R1b. These are also called clades. The Haplogroups are further divided into 153 subclades. Haplogroup R1b has four subclades: (1) Atlantic (2)Alpine- Iberian, Southern Germany (3) North Sea Baltic (4) Russian Baltic (Alpine K).

Back to the humans who survived the ice age by living below the ice/tree lines. Those living in the Iberian Peninsula are designated Haplogroup R1b (western European). Those in the Balkans, became Haplogroup I (Nordic). Those in the Ukraine, became R1a (eastern European). Each group migrated northward back into the upper parts of Europe and Asia as weather permitted.

Haplogroup R1b is nowadays common on the western Atlantic coast as far as Scotland. Haplogroup I is common across Europe and up into Scandinavia. Haplogroup R1a is common in eastern Europe and has also spread across into central Asia and as far as India and Pakistan.

These three major haplogroups: R1b, I, and R1a account for approx. 80% of Europe's present day population."

So the odds are that any Callan/Callen/Callin & other variations joining our group will fall within these three Haplogroups & their subclades.

Kit # 41556 TEST RESULTS:
(1)Jan 27, 2006: yDNA test results match Kit #48273 at the 25 marker level with a genetic distance of 3, indicating "probably not related". At 16 generations back, there's a 50% probability of a common ancestor.
(2) July 30, 2007: yDNA test results match Kit #N50255 at the 25 marker level with a genetic distance of 2 = "probably related". At 12 generations back, there's a 54% probability of a common ancestor.
(3) Feb 12, 2008: yDNA test results match kit #109653 25/25 = related. This confirms that both donors are descended from William Callen m. Elizabeth Taylor.

Kit# 41556 HAPLOGROUP DISCUSSION:
The Haplotype (combination of markers & alleles)indicates a Haplogroup (ancient ethnic origins) of R1b1b2 = Western European, subclade/subgroup = Atlantic Modal Haplotype. R1b1b2 is the most common Haplogroup and are found throughout the western part of Europe dating back approx. 28,000 years. R1b1b2 Haplogroups are thought to be the descendants of the Palaeolithic (old stone age)hunter gatherers who arrived in Europe before the last ice age about 40,000 years ago. This group of people are found in southern and western Europe and as far north as Scotland. This group was one of the first to populate the British Isles.
The R1b1b2 subclade "Atlantic Modal Haplotype" is found on the Atlantic coast in Iberia (Spain & Portugal), France & in the remote parts of Ireland and Scotland. It dates from 14,000 to 18,000 years ago. The donor has an English surname. His Haplogroup is the Atlantic Modal Haplotype, and his ancient ethnic origins are Celtic (Scottish, Welsh, Irish). This is corroborated by his marker DYS#390 having 25 alleles rather than the normal 24, which indicates Scottish ancestry.

(1) Henry Callan born c1818 in County Monaghan, Ireland; died 1875 in County Monaghan, Ireland. Married Ann McAnally.

KIT # 43260 TEST RESULTS:
(1)26 Jan 2006 yDNA test results for 1-37 markers, no match.
(2)11 July 2006, 25 marker level, genetic distance of 2 (probably related) with Kit #63872.

KIT # 43260 HAPLOGROUP DISCUSSION:
FamilytreeDNA reports his Haplogroup is R1b1b2 "western European", meaning they migrated throughout the western part of Europe after the last ice age (about 12,000 years ago), eventually migrating into Ireland.

(1) William E. Callen b. 20 May 1850 Philadelphia, Pa. d. after 1910 Ohio. Married Mary Alma Colby. In 1880 census, William stated his parents were born in Scotland. 1900 census shows his parents were born in Ireland. In 1910 census, parents again reported as being born in Ireland.

(3) Harry Nelson Callen born 13 Nov 1917 Chippewa Falls, Ohio. Died 17 April 1975 Anaheim Co Ca. Married Lucille E. Matson.
(4)Kit# 48273

KIT # 48273 TEST RESULTS:
(1) Jan 27, 2006: yDNA test results indicate a match with Kit#41556 at the 25 marker level with a genetic distance of 3, indicating "probably not related" . At 16 generations back (400 yrs) there's a 50% probability of a common ancestor. Since Kit #48273's ancestors lived early 1800's in Scotland/Ireland, it's unlikely we will find a common ancestor with Kit #41556 without a search of United Kingdom records in the late 1600's - early 1700's era.
(2) July 30, 2007: yDNA test results at the 25 marker level indicate a genetic distance of 3 = "probably not related" to kit #N50255.
(3) Feb 12, 2008: yDNA test results at the 25 marker level indicate a genetic distance of 3 = "probably not related" to kit #109635. The sponsor of kit # 41556 will upgrade to 37 markers to determine kinship between these two donors.

KIT #48273 HAPLOGROUP:
FamilytreeDNA predicts his haplogroup (ancient ethnic origins) is R1b1b2. Since he has a close match to Kit #41556, my opinion is that his origins are Celtic with Scot-Irish ancestry.
