Project News
(1) 03 Aug 2005: Callen (and variation) Surname DNA testing project was begun.
(2) 03 Aug 2005: The first participant, Kit #41556 joined, selected yDNA 25 marker test.
(3) 05 Sep 2005: The second participant, Kit #43260 joined, selected yDNA 25 marker test.
(4) 12 Oct 2005: 1-12 marker test results posted for kit #41556.
(5)18 Oct 2005: 13-25 marker test results posted for kit #41556.
(6) 27 Oct 2005: FamilytreeDNA received the DNA kit back from kit #43260.
(7) Estimated dates for test results for kit #43260 = 12/15 and 12/30/2005.
(8) 24 Nov 2005 1-12 marker test results received on kit#43260. His genetic distance to kit#41556 = 5, implying they are not kin.
(9) 29 Nov 2005. 13-25 marker test results received on kit#43260. His genetic distance (at the 25 marker level),to kit#41556 = 11, confirming they are not kin. Only genetic distances of 0, 1 or 2 at the 25 marker level confirms kinship.
(10) 06 Dec 2005: FTDNA offers two $30 and one $15 gift certificates to new participants. Must select 25 or 37 markers on yDNA test to qualify for $30 gift; must select mtDNA to qualify for $15 gift. Offers good until 31 Dec 2005.
(11) 07 Dec 2005: 3rd Participant, kit #48273 joined, selected 37 marker yDNA test.
(12) 15 Dec 2005. Kit#43260 upgraded from 25 to 37 markers.
(13) 28 Dec 2005 FamilytreeDNA received the DNA sample back from kit#48273.
(14)25 Jan 2006 test results for 26-37 markers received by kit#43260.
(15) 27 Jan 2006 Kit#48273 test results for 1-37 markers received. He matched Kit#41556 at the 25 marker level with a genetic distance of 3, indicating "probably not related". Kit#48273 and Kit#43260 have a genetic distance of 22 at the 37 marker level, indicating they are not kin.
Since Kit #48273's ancestors lived in Scotland/ Ireland in the early 1800's, it's unlikely the name of the common ancestor will be found without a trace of United Kingdom records in the early 1700's era.
(16) 19 May 2006. The fourth participant joined. His kit number = 63872. He selected the yDNA 25 marker test.
(17) 01 June 2006 FamilytreeDNA received DNA kit #63872 back from participant #4. Test results estimated 7/28 & 8/4/2006.
(18)11 July 2006. 25 marker test results for kit #63872 show a genetic distance of 2 (probably related) with kit #43260.
(19) 25 May 2007, the fifth participant, kit # N49562 has joined, and selected the mtDNA test.
(20) 08 June 2007, the sixth participant, kit #N50255 has been added to our group. He had selected the yDNA 12 marker test previously. He has a 12/12 match with participant #1, kit#41556, which indicates they may be kin. An upgrade to the yDNA 25 marker test would confirm this.
(21) 30 July 2007. Kit # N49562 1-25 marker test results match 23/25 with kit #41556 = "probaly related"; 22/25 with kit #48273 = "probably not related". Since kit #48273 opted for 37 markers, either kit # N49562 or kit #41556 should upgrade to 37 markers to see if kinship might show at that level.
(22) 30 July 2007. The Group Administrator emailed kit # N49562 for a 2nd time asking for an upgrade to yDNA 25 markers so that his yDNA test results can be compared to the rest of the group.
(23) Nov 12, 2007, 7th participant joined, kit #101794, selecting the 12 marker yDNA test.
(24) Nov 12, 2007 Participant #7 does not match any current members.
