Background

The BESSIS surname seems to have origins in several locations:

• In Tunisia, with several well known Jewish individuals and families, for instance Albert Bessis and Head Tunisian Rabbi Yechoua Bessis. Variants include PSIS and BEZIZ. BESSIS families have also lived in Algeria, Morocco and Russia. Current descendants are known to live in France, Canada, the United States of America, and Israël among others.
  
• In certain Greek islands, where the name belongs to several Christian families. Current descendants are known to live in Greece, in the USA and elsewhere.
  
• In France from the 17th century onwards, with many Catholic births and marriages recorded in Church records.
  

The project enables sharing of genealogical information and matching of ancestral DNA between BESSIS males, regardless of their origins or religion.
