Project Surnames:| Bauman | Baumann | Bowman | Bowman mit German origins | | Bowman mit Swiss origins | Deutschman | German | Schweizer | | Swiss | Project Background: • This project began as a genetic genealogy surname project to determine the Y-DNA chromosome YSTR marker alleles for various German speaking Swiss and German immigrant family groups who had the Bauman or Baumann surname. In addition, it also includes those with similar sounding English versions (Bowman, Boman) family surname groups who have a known or suspected paper trail or oral history which indicated their immigrant lines were German speaking from German or Switzerland.
• A secondary impetus was to determine if any of them have a previously unknown genetic direct male line ancestry in common in the USA and/or Europe in the last 200 to 600 years.
HOW TO JOIN THIS PROJECT: At this time you must have been tested either directly via FTDNA or indirectly via FTDNA via the NGS Genographic Project to join this project. Genographic Project customers must first do the free transfer of their results from the NGS database to FTDNA's database. See the "Learn More" link at the bottom of your Genographic Project personal page for how to do the free transfer of your test data to FTDNA or call FTDNA for assistance in doing the transfer. Once you have a personal account page at FTDNA, to join this Bauman project sign/log in to your FTDNA personal account page and click on the blue JOIN button in the upper part of your personal page screen. Find the "Surnames" projects section. Click on the letter "B" category. Then click on the Bauman project link. You will then see a description of this project. Scroll down to the bottom and click on the small white join button at the bottom of the Bauman project join page. Put a few appropriate words in the comments block if you wish. That is all there is to it. If you have not been tested before either by FTDNA or the Genographic Project and want to join this project you need to order a YDNA test kit. Click on the Request to Join This Group link in the upper left hand corner of this screen to contact the Project Admin and arrange ordering your test kit. Note: Do not use the above left corner Join Link if you have already been tested at FamilyTreeDNA. Instead you would use the Join Link in your existing personal account at FTDNA to request to join this project. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: • The initial goal was to determine the Y-DNA chromosome YSTR marker alleles for various German speaking German and Swiss Bauman/Baumann immigrant family groups, along with those similar sounding English (Bowman, Boman) family surname groups in the USA.
• Related to the initial goal, was determining if any of them have a genetic direct male line ancestor in common in the USA and/or Europe in the last 200 to 600 years.
• Additionally, one goal is to find matching Bauman/Baumann families in Germany and Switzerland and link the distance USA cousins with their distant German speaking cousins in the homeland.
• An added goal is to find descendents of George Bowman and Mary Hite, to determine if he is related to the George Bowman, born in Bodigheim, Mosbach, Baden, Germany – who immigrated to Berks County, PA, then to Rockingham County, VA.
• Searching for descendents of Wendell Bauman, Germantown, PA in 1707, and later in Pequea Colony, Lancaster County, PA to match with Kit E2377 who's roots are from the Durrenmoss in Hirtzel, Switzerland.
* And, the latest goal is to find descendents of all Bowman families living in Shenandoah and Rockingham Counties of Virginia in the 1700s, to delineate and distinguish the Bowman families from each other according to their DNA profiles. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project News: • 19 OCT 2007: Bauman Surname Project was launched.
• 27 NOV 2007: Kit number E2377, Mr. Baumann of Switzerland, joing the project. He was YDNA 37 tested via Igenea.com, which is the European branch of FamilyTreeDNA.com. We have a match! Kit E2377 has a close match of 11/12 at 37 markers to kits 17,490 and 24,418, both from USA who have the English phonetic version of the name spelled as Bowman. However, they are descendents of a German speaking immigrant, pre-Revolutionary War, who came using the name Bauman/Baumann. Thus depending on the results of an upgrade from YDNA12 to YDNA37 or YDNA67 by kit E2377, these three may all be close genetic cousins on the direct male line. This will mean the Atlantic has been bridged via a simple YDNA genetic genealogy test! It is time to check the paper trail genealogy notes for these lines.
