Project Background: This is a genealogical study of the Brandon family using DNA analysis to validate earlier research and to find connections between families.
The purpose of the Brandon DNA project is to expand our genealogical research by confirming or disproving family lines through DNA testing. We are in the process of determining if the Brandons who first settled in PA and spread south to NC and SC and west to TN, GA, KY, AL, OH, IL, and other states and the Brandons who first appear in VA and spread south and west, share a common ancestry. We would like to know the relationship of these early North American Brandons to the Brandon families of England, Ireland, Scotland, including the Brandons who emigrated from France, Germany, and elsewhere in the world. Of course, we would like to include those Brandons who left the European Continent for Australia, New Zealand, etc. We extend an invitation to all members of the Brandon or derivative surname (Branden, Brandin, Brandan, Brandom, Brandham, Brandonberg) regardless of origins worldwide to join our project. |
Project Goals: Our first Goal: To produce a documented genealogical and DNA history of the Brandon family from their entrance in the New World to about 1800.
Objectives:
Develop a network of participants who will:
become DNA donors.
contribute to the Brandon research.
contribute toward the cost of DNA testing.
Provide analysis of DNA results. |

Fill out the form; we generally recommend the 25 marker test which is $171. The reason for this is that the 12 marker test ($101) only gives a yes or no answer when compared to another sample, “Yes, there is a common ancestor for these two people.” Or “No, there is not a common ancestor for these two people.” If there is a common ancestor, the 25 marker test will give an approximate idea how many generations it is back to their most recent common ancestor. A 37/37 match moves the 50% probability to 4 and 1/2 generations. You can always upgrade to 37 markers for an additional $59 later for comparisons among matching groups.
The collection kit will be sent to you within two or three days. It contains two small vials with a small amount of liquid, two small scrubber like brushes, and a paper which you can sign to give consent to FamilyTreeDNA to give you and another person your names and email addresses in case you match and have both signed the consent form. I recommend signing the paper. It is to be included in the envelope when you send your DNA back to the company.
The collection of the sample is very simple. Take the little scrubber and rub it vigorously on the inside of your cheek for 60 seconds. You want to be sure and get a good sample of DNA. Then place the scrubber inside the little vial and push on the plunger at the end of the scrubber and push the scrubber free and into the vial. Be sure you cap it well so it does not leak. Then wait at least 8 hours and do the same thing again with the other scrubber. Then mail to FamilyTreeDNA. It will be 5 to 6 weeks after you send it back before the results are sent to you, so send it back as soon as you can.
Other Ways You Can Participant
1. Find Eligible Brandon Males to Provide DNA
2. Women and men whose surname is not a derivative of Brandon cannot provide DNA for the study; however, there are many other ways they can help. If you can’t give DNA perhaps you can find an eligible male relative who can test in your place. You may have to go back two or three generations to a grandfather or great grandfather’s brother’s sons and trace the line down to present day.
3. Help Research the DNA Family Lines. Each of the family lines has to be researched to find the connecting ancestors. Members of the donors family line can provide information and help in that research. |

DNA Test Results (Alleles) for Project Members * Haplogroups in green have been
confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have
been predicted by Family Tree DNA based on unambiguous results in the
individual's personal page. This has been placed on this GAP page for your ease
and convenience. Please note that for any predicted results we see no reason for
ordering a SNP test to confirm the Haplogroup. if a – is in the HAPLO field then
we feel that the comparative results are not clear and unambiguous and if the
kit holder wants to know their SNP with 100% confidence they may consider
ordering a SNP confirmation test.
