Project Surnames

Algood, Allgood, Alligood

Project Background

DNA testing is a relatively new addition to the genealogist’s arsenal of tools in the search for ancestors. It is a supplement to the more traditional methods of contacting known relatives, perusing books and microfilm, and following the paper trail of original records. DNA testing can help bridge gaps in the traditional records and overcome “brick walls.” It can indicate the best direction for future research.

The Allgood Surname Project plans to use the male Y-chromosome to illuminate the path to direct male ancestors, since it also follows the surname path. Comparing the test results of two men with the same surname can indicate how closely they are related and how long ago their Most Recent Common Ancestor lived. It may also show that men with different surnames may actually have a common ancestor and confirm surname variants.

The Allgood haplogroup appears to be R1b, which has its highest frequency in Western Europe. The deep ancestors of this haplogroup are thought to have taken refuge in southern France/northern Spain during the last ice age. As the ice retreated, they moved north through Europe, reaching the British Isles about 6,000 years ago.
