Project Surnames:Project Background: DNA testing is a relatively new addition to the genealogist’s arsenal of tools in the search for ancestors. It is a supplement to the more traditional methods of contacting known relatives, perusing books and microfilm, and following the paper trail of original records. DNA testing can help bridge gaps in the traditional records and overcome “brick walls.” It can indicate the best direction for future research.
The Allgood Surname Project plans to use the male Y-chromosome to illuminate the path to direct male ancestors, since it also follows the surname path. Comparing the test results of two men with the same surname can indicate how closely they are related and how long ago their Most Recent Common Ancestor lived. It may also show that men with different surnames may actually have a common ancestor and confirm surname variants.
The Allgood haplogroup appears to be R1b, which has its highest frequency in Western Europe. The deep ancestors of this haplogroup are thought to have taken refuge in southern France/northern Spain during the last ice age. As the ice retreated, they moved north through Europe, reaching the British Isles about 6,000 years ago. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project Goals: The progenitor of the Allgoods originating in Virginia appears to be Edward Allgood who immigrated to the colony in the 1600s, the first known record that mentions his name being made in 1669. His widow, Elizabeth, was named Executrix for his estate in January 1684/5 but she, too, died before March 1686/7.
Were there Allgood immigrants in other colonies?
Are those of the Alligood surname closely related to the Allgoods?
Edward and Elizabeth had four children: William, Elizabeth, John and Richard. Of the sons, only William produced descendants as far as is known. John died at about the age of 23 or 24; so, he probably didn’t marry and have any children. Richard lived to adulthood, but little is known about him. Did he have a family?
William produced three sons: Edward (b. 24 Mar 1697/8), William (b. 30 Nov 1700), and John (b. about 1707). The baptisms of Edward’s sons John (b. 30 Nov 1724) and Edward (b. 23 Dec 1730) are recorded, but he probably had others—perhaps Ishmael?
Who were the sons of William and John mentioned above?
Who were the fathers of fourth-generation Allgoods in Virginia such as Joshua, Moses, David, William (listed in the “First Census” of Virginia in Mecklenburg Co.), and John “Junior” of Mecklenburg Co. (also listed in that census)?
Who were the fathers of fifth-generation Allgoods in Virginia such as Samuel, Spencer, William “Sorrel,” William “Pike,” and Jeremiah?
Did Edward (c1767-1820) and Elizabeth Hudson Allgood have eight sons--or only four?
There are many lines that need to be connected. If you are a descendant of any of the men listed above, please consider having your DNA tested so that together we can connect them. | Family Tree DNA - Genealogy by Genetics, Ltd. Project Background, Goals, Results and News are copyright of the specific Surname Project Project News: A grand jury in Richmond County, Virginia, presented Edward Allgood (b. 24 Mar 1697/8) for living in adultery with Judith Fann. So, our first Allgood tester was actually recruited by the Fann (or Fenn) family. This man is known to be descended from John Allgood (b. ca 1757 in Virginia; d. 1834 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky), who was thought to be descended from the Edward mentioned above. When our tester's results were returned in April 2006, however, they did not match those of two men thought to descend from Judith Fann and Edward.
Our second tester is descended from Edward E. Allgood, born 1804 and died 1881 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, who married Eliza Akin in 1828. Our third tester is descended from Edward Allgood, born about 1767 in Virginia and died in 1820 in Mercer County, Kentucky, who married Elizabeth Hudson in Mecklenburg County in 1788. Our fourth tester is descended from William Allgood, born about 1760 in Virginia and died 1847 in Surry County, North Carolina, who married Sarah Royal in Mecklenburg County in 1790.
The DNA results of all four of these Allgood men indicate that they are quite closely related, although none match exactly. We are currently awaiting the return of a fifth kit.
We need men from other branches of the Allgood family to participate so we can discover how the various branches are connected.
