Project Goals
The primary goal of this Y-DNA project is to provide a valid method to assist in identifying and then genetically comparing certain Y-chromosome markers of male descendants of the various Aasland immigrant families who cane from Norway to North America in the nineteenth century.
The secondary goal of this Y-DNA project is to try to determine whether male descendants of two different Ole Aasland families who settled in Day County, South Dakota in the latter portion of the 1800's are related. Their respective progeny, in some cases, continued to live in Day County for many years. To my knowledge there is no known connection between these two Ole Aasland families.
Ole Jorgensen Aasland was purportedly born 18 March, 1826 in Telemarken, Norway. He married Gunhild Andersdatter Hvalen about 1852. Gunhild was b. about 1830 also in Norway.
This family immigrated to the US in 1872 as follows :
Passenger list 1872 – frigate : Laurdal -- Captain : Ludvig Petersen -- Departure Porsgrunn Apr. 13 - Arrival : Quebec June 1 Source : NAC C-4527 list 27
This Ole J Aasland family at first is found in Dodge Co., MN until 1887 when Ole died and the entire family appears to then have moved to Day Co., SD.
There is another Ole Aasland b. abt 1845 in Norway who settled in Day Co. and is found there in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Federal Census enumerations. It appears this Ole Aasland may have died in Day Co. as a death record is found for an Ole O Aasland d. 10/11/1935.
