The Jefferson-Hemmings case, built on DNA testing and published in 1998, was one of the catalysts of what later became the field of Genetic Genealogy.
Did Thomas Jefferson father a child with his slave Sally Hemmings?
While DNA cannot tell that the child product of that relationship was Thomas' son, DNA can tell for sure that the son was "a Jefferson". Family Tree DNA has the Y-DNA signature of the Jefferson line:

A simple Y-DNA test can compare yourself to that signature and tell you how far (or close) you are to it.
You can test your Y-DNA to verify if it matches to this or any other signatures.
You can either search by surname in the side bar and see if your surname (or variant) is subject of a study, in which case you'll be entitled to a reduced group rate, or, you can order directly here, choosing between 12, 25 or 37 markers.
