About us

RETTIE is a toponymic surname of local origin from the old lands Reattie or Raittie in the parish of Innerboyndie, Banffshire. These lands were granted to Gilbert de Dun by David II (son of Robert de Brus) in 1367. Willmus RETTIE was elected to the Common Council of the Burgh of Aberdeen in 1474. The surname remains most common in Aberdeenshire in the North-East of Scotland with past emigration largely to North America. So say the paper records! This DNA project welcomes all RETTIE's from across the world wishing to verify this Scottish ancestry with living proof. Please note that we recommend that you test for at least 37 markers. This DNA project forms part of the RETTIE One-Name Study, registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies. See also http://rettiefamilyhistory.wordpress.com/
