Description
WHO CAN JOIN
Individuals (males) with a Hinshaw/Henshaw/Hanshaw surname or with a surname derivations of one of those surnames.
All such surnamed individuals are welcome to join our Hinshaw Surname Project.
And sisters, cousins, nieces, mothers, grandmothers, et. al., who have relatives with such surnames are certainly welcome to encourage their male relatives to join.
HOW TO JOIN
The process to join the Hinshaw Surname Project is quite straightforward:
1. The first step is for you to order a DNA testing kit from www.FamilyTreeDNA.com here:
http://www.familytreedna.com/products.html
2. Next, once your DNA testing is complete and you have been assigned a personal and confidential page by FTDNA, you simply need to visit your personal page, click the Join icon on that page, fill in the brief info on next page and join the Hinshaw Surname Project.
The Hinshaws and Henshaws came to the colonies/States from Ireland and England, respectively. Based on the best information we now have, the current project members are derived from the Hinshaw branch that migrated from Ulster (Northern Ireland today) to York County, PA in the 1600's. One group of these Hinshaws then made its way to North Carolina some 20 years later, and then to Alabama in the early 1800's -- probably via Tennessee for a generation or so.
We hope that members of other branches of the Hinshaw/Henshaw/Hanshaw surname will join our project and help us jointly to solve some of their and our earliest genealogy puzzles.
Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, this test is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way of marriage, so the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with this surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNA or the mtDNAPlus test and participate in an mtDNA project.
