Description
I am researching the DNA of people with ancestors from the region of CALABRIA in southern Italy. Of special interest to me is to get people from my own ancestors' villages of Gioiosa Ionica and Martone into my database. You are welcome to join this project if your ancestors are from CALABRIA.
If you have already taken a DNA test through National Geographic's Genograhic Project, and would like to transfer your results to this project, simply login to your National Geographic Account at www.genographic.org and you will be given the option to transfer to Family Tree DNA, where you can choose the Calabria DNA Project as the group to join.
A little explanation on the DNA test: It is a simple cheek swab on the inside of the mouth. For a male, the lab can test for the Y DNA pattern, which will show the distant ancestry of a person's father's father's paternal line way back in time-- for example, my distant Loccisano grandfather, before reaching Italy, came from the Turkey/Persia area (confirmed by a specific mutation on my Y chromosome), and matches more people from Western Turkey than any other place in the world
A similar test can be done on a female line.
Requirements
A Geographic Project connects individuals who believe their direct line comes from a specific location. The Dual Geographic Projects are for individuals who order an mtDNA or Y-DNA test. Either their direct maternal line (mother's mother's mother's...) or direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) originates from this area.
