Description
All Plant-like names are invited to participate. A simple Y-DNA12 test would show whether you match with the main English Plant family. If you are, for example, an English or USA male Plant, there is about 50% chance that you will be found to belong to the main English Plant family, which descends from the early spelling Plante or Plonte or Plente. It would be interesting, for example, to test whether the name Plenty (perhaps originally Plente) also descends from the same family. Whatever your name, a simple Y-DNA37 test (though slightly more expensive than a Y-DNA12 test) is recommended, as it will identify your own particular branch of the family more uniquely.
Early Plants, though scattered, were near various de Warenne lands, and there have been claims that the surnames Warren and Waring descend from the de Warenne Plantagenets who were (like the Somersets) illegitimate descendants of count Geffrey Plante Genest. However, it seems so far that, unlike Plant, Warren and Waring are multi-origin names lacking matches; and, no result is yet available for the surname Somerset.
The DNA signature of the main English Plant family does not match with that of a French-Canadian Plante family (for whom there are only 5 results so far) or someone with the spelling Plants (1 result so far): these are hence genetically distinct and unrelated. There have been changes down the centuries between various spellings such as Plant and Plantt. A Spaniard named Planter has had a near match to two English Plants from south Lincolnshire, who are not from the main English Plant family. Results would also be of interest for the noble Swiss family Planta or a French Plantard or Plante or Planty family.
By participating, you will be able to compare your own result with this growing body of information, potentially putting you in touch with your closest male-line relatives. For further details, see:

Requirements
A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname. Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, this test is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way of marriage, so the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with this surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNA or the mtDNAPlus test and participate in an mtDNA project.
