Questions and Answers

  1. What is the Family Tree DNA Family Finder Transfer program? faq id: 1692

The Family Finder Transfer program is the opportunity for those who have taken an autosomal DNA test with 23andMe to either retest or import their autosomal results to Family Tree DNA. With the Family Finder Transfer program you receive:

    • If you are a new customer, a myFTDNA 2.0 account (personal page).
    • Your autosomal DNA results uploaded to and stored on Family Tree DNA's servers.
    • Matching to all autosomal Family Finder results in our matching database.
    • Your ethnic origins results from our Population Finder program.
    • All standard tools and pages associated with the autosomal Family Finder test and the Population Finder program.

Your import options depend on the test you took at 23andMe. If you took the "V2" test, you will have the option to order a new Family Finder test kit at a discount. If you took the "V3" test that uses the Illumina OmniExpress chip, you will be able to import your results into the Family Tree DNA database.

    Transfer options are:

    Option Price Project MembershipMatching
    FTDNA Kit Import (V2) $99+$70 = $169 Yes Retest
FTDNA Kit Import (V3) $99 Yes Database Import
    New Customer Transfer (V2) $99+$70 = $169 Yes Retest
New Customer Transfer (V3) $99 Yes Database Import

Note: Although 23andMe's V3 chip contains some mtDNA, X-Chromosome, and Y-Chromosome results, they are not part of the Relative Finder transfer. Read more...

  4. Which companies' autosomal results qualify for the current transfer offer? I tested with deCodeMe, do I qualify for the transfer? faq id: 1695

Autosomal DNA results from any company that uses the Illumina OmniExpress chip qualify for the Family Finder Transfer program. At this time, this is 23andMe's V3 Chip test.

Because their test uses a different data set, we cannot accept results from deCodeMe at this time. We do offer a discounted retest for those who have results from a chip that does not include enough common markers with our Family Finder test such as the 23andMe V2 chip.

These may represent new lineages.

  16. Is it possible to get a refund for my Family Finder Transfer program purchase? faq id: 2068

Generally, the Family Finder Transfer program follows our standard refund policy. However, if after uploading your record you find that it is the V2 version, and you do not want to use the discount coupon to upgrade to the Family Finder test, we will refund you the transfer fee, less the credit card fee and the processing fee related to the manual purging of the data that you have uploaded. This is a refund of $70 of the $99 transfer fee. Note that the coupon displayed at that time will be deactivated as well when a refund is requested.
