Questions and Answers

  1. What is the Family Tree DNA Y-DNA STR Transfer program? faq id: 1613

The Y-DNA Transfer program is the opportunity for those who previously Y-DNA tested at a Sorenson Genomics lab based company to take part in Family Tree DNA group projects and to retest at Family Tree DNA.

Transfer customers may choose a basic transfer of Y-DNA46 panel results that will allow them to view their results in a new account and to join group projects. These are the Transfer Y-DNA33 and the Transfer Y-DNA46. They do not include either database matching or haplogroup prediction.

Transfer customers may also choose to test the Y-DNA STR markers required for matching to Family Tree DNA's customers. These are the Transfer Y-DNA33 + Y-DNA25 and the Transfer Y-DNA46 + Y-DNA37. They include database matching and haplogroup prediction. However, they also require a new DNA sample.

    Transfer options are:

Option Price Project Membership Database Matching Haplogroup Prediction
Transfer Y-DNA33 $19 Yes No No
Transfer Y-DNA46 $19 Yes No No
    Transfer Y-DNA33 + Y-DNA25* $58 Yes Yes Yes
    Transfer Y-DNA46 + Y-DNA37* $58 Yes Yes Yes

    * If you upgrade after ordering a basic transfer, the cost will be $49 US.

Note: At this time, Ancestry.com transfers are only for Y-DNA STR results. They do not include results from mtDNA or autosomal DNA tests.

The Y-chromosome DNA STR markers tested by Sorenson Labs as part of their Y-DNA33 and Y-DNA46 panels do not fully match the 25 and 37 Y-DNA STR markers tested by Family Tree DNA as part of our panels.

Therefore, to be matched against customers in our database, Y-DNA Transfer customers will need to upgrade their results to include the missing markers. The Transfer Y-DNA33 + Y-DNA25 and Transfer Y-DNA46 + Y-DNA37 products provide the needed upgrades.

  6. Are mtDNA test results from other labs transferable to Family Tree DNA? faq id: 1622

No, because the Sorenson lab does not use the same panels for mtDNA testing as Family Tree DNA, we are not able to offer a direct transfer. However, we do provide a discount for those who wish to retest.

  7. If my Y-DNA STR results include micro-alleles, will they be transferred? faq id: 1623

If you have a micro-allele value for one of the STRs that you transfer, it will not currently be included. This is because the Family Tree DNA database does not currently include micro-allele values. However, Family Tree DNA will offer all the opportunity to submit an update request when our database does include micro-alleles.

  8. After I transfer Y-DNA results, what are my options for upgrading with Family Tree DNA? faq id: 1624

After you transfer your Y-DNA results to Family Tree DNA, you may:

    • Order the Y-DNA33/25 or Y-DNA46/37 marker completion panel (if you have not yet done so)
    • Upgrade to higher Y-DNA testing levels
    • Order other tests we offer at Family Tree DNA

  9. After I transfer my Y-DNA lab results to Family Tree DNA, will I have to submit new DNA to Family Tree DNA in order to upgrade? faq id: 1626

Yes, if you wish to order additional testing or an upgrade to your Y-DNA results, you will need to submit a new DNA sample.

  10. Once I transfer, how quickly will I be able to view my results? Will I receive login credentials for the Family Tree DNA website? faq id: 1628

After you transfer and submit your results for review, they will be confirmed and posted to your Family Tree DNA myFTDNA account in 2 to 3 weeks. If you ordered a Y-DNA25 or Y-DNA37 test with your transfer, you will receive those results in 5 to 6 weeks after you return your new kit.

  11. What features does Family Tree DNA provide for viewing my DNA results? faq id: 1630

Family Tree DNA offers several pages to both view your matches and understand your results in a historic context. You may read about those for Y-DNA results in the myFTDNA User Guide.

  12. Once I transfer, will I receive login credentials for the Family Tree DNA website? faq id: 1632

Yes, we will e-mail new login credentials to you.

  13. What is Family Tree DNA's privacy policy? faq id: 1636

Family Tree DNA employs the most stringent privacy policy. We are committed to the U.S.-EU Safe Harbor program - The European Commission's Directive on Data Protection. Family Tree DNA does not share information with third parties, and our customers choose what information they want to disclose.

  14. If I transfer my lab results to Family Tree DNA and then decide I no longer want to be in your database, will I be able to remove my results? faq id: 1638

Yes, it is your DNA; you have the right to ask for its removal.

  15. Will any stored DNA be transferred to Family Tree DNA? faq id: 1640

No, the transfer of results does not include any DNA you may have stored at another lab.

  16. As a project administrator, why should I accept those from outside labs into my project? faq id: 1642

Accepting those with outside results into your project will help you bring new people into your project. These may represent new lineages.

  17. How will potential transfers learn about Family Tree DNA's Y-DNA Transfer program? As a project administrator, how may I reach out to those who may wish to use the Y-DNA Transfer to join my project? faq id: 1679

Promoting the Y-DNA Transfer program depends on the efforts of project administrators. Your method for reaching out to potential transfers will vary. Here are some ideas.

    • Update your project's Public Project Website with information about the Y-DNA Transfer.
    • Post notices on message boards or through other social networking sites related to your project.
    • Contact those in public Y-DNA databases.
    PublicProjectWebsite

  18. After taking part in the Y-DNA Transfer, why did some of my marker values change? (i.e., DYS442, GATAH4, and others) faq id: 1683

Family Tree DNA and Sorenson Labs use different standards to report some STR (short tandem repeat) marker values. After you transfer your results, we convert them to Family Tree DNA's standard.

  19. I tested with Relative Genetics, do I qualify for the transfer? faq id: 1686

When Relative Genetics ceased operations, they transferred all results to DNA Ancestry (Ancestry.com). Depending on the number of tested markers you now have in your Ancestry.com account (at least the Y-DNA33 or Y-DNA46), you may qualify for the Y-DNA Transfer. If you need help accessing your Ancestry.com account, you will need to contact their customer service. We cannot provide support for Ancestry.com.

Note: Even if you do not qualify for the Y-DNA Transfer, you may still be eligible for our retest program. You may read more about it here. (http://www.familytreedna.com/PDF/PROMO_GAP.pdf)

  20. In GAP 2.0, will I as a project administrator be able to evaluate Y-DNA Transfer kits with the TiP and Genetic Distance tool pages? faq id: 2069

The ability to use the TiP and Genetic Distance pages in GAP 2.0 to evaluate Y-DNA Transfer program kits is limited by the type of transfer. Once someone upgrades to the standard Y-DNA25 or Y-DNA37 packages, their results will be available using these pages. Otherwise, they are only available on the result display pages (Y-DNA Classic, Y-DNA Colorized, and Y-DNA Results).
