  3. I have an idea for improving the group administration page (GAP) interface. Who should I contact? faq id: 1067

Family Tree DNA would like to hear from all Project Administrators about what they would like to see from the Group Administration Page (GAP). To help with this, the Information Technology (IT) department has included a Feedback option in the new GAP interface. To use it:

    1. Login to the new GAP. (https://www.familytreedna.com/login.aspx
    2. On the menu bar, look for the Feedback link.
    3. Click the link and fill out the form.

  4. I have found a problem with the group administration page (GAP) interface. Who should I contact? faq id: 1068

Family Tree DNA would like to hear about any problems or concerns our Project Administrators have with the Group Administration Page (GAP). To help with this, the Information Technology (IT) department has included a Feedback option in the GAP 2.0 interface. To use it:

    1. Login to GAP 2.0. (https://www.familytreedna.com/login.aspx)
    2. On the menu bar, look for the Feedback link.
    3. Click the link and fill out the form.

  5. What is Single Sign On (SSO)? faq id: 1069

Single Sign On (SSO) is the use of one Personal ID and password to access all Family Tree DNA projects that you administrate and/or co-administrate.

  6. What programing languages and technology were used to build GAP 2.0? faq id: 1072

The user interface for GAP 2.0 is XHTML and CSS. The ASP.NET framework, C#, and Transact-SQL (TSQL) are used for website programming and database interactions.

  7. Does GAP 2.0 include the display of advanced Y-chromosome STR markers? faq id: 1073

Although the display of advanced STR markers is not part of GAP 2.0's planned release, we do intend to implement a display in the Group Administrator Pages (GAP.) It will be part of the GAP 2.1 release. Work on GAP 2.1 is currently scheduled to begin after the upgrade to the data structure of Y-chromosome (Y-DNA) results has been completed and mandated NIST changes have been implemented.

This will allow all group administrators to familiarize themselves with all changes and to provide feedback in the form of bug reports and suggestions. Changes that impact our group administrators are not taken lightly, and we do our best to provide a smooth and easy transition.

  8. In GAP 2.0, why are multi-copy STR markers shown in a single column? faq id: 1075

Family Tree DNA is now (with the roll out of GAP 2.0) reporting multi-copy STR marker results in a single column. As the definitive solution to the problem of displaying multi-copy markers, this new display method and database structure allows us to show the true numbers of certain multi-copy markers, and it is flexible enough to grow indefinitely as the science changes.

Some men have as many as twelve copies of the DYS464 marker. That means they also have from two to six copies of DYS459 and CDY. Using the old system, we would need to change our database structure, corresponding results fields for each Y-chromosome DNA sample in the database, and every piece of code related to impacted multi-copy markers each time a new number of copies was discovered.

The change allows for both better reporting of results to our customers and better use of user interface development resources.

  9. When I opened the CSV file in Excel, some results were shown as dates. What happened? faq id: 1076

Microsoft Office automatically converts some number and dash combinations to dates when a CSV file is imported into Excel. Unfortunately, this is not something we can fix. Excel is working `as intended' per Microsoft. Therefore, the CSV file should only be used by users who intend to import the data into another application that can properly handle CSV as an input format. As a workaround, we provide a second version of each download that is an Excel and OpenOffice compatible XML file.

  10. The XML download file will not open in MAC Office. Why not? faq id: 1077

There is a known issue with MAC versions of Excel being unable to open XML files. Microsoft has documented the issue but does not provide a solution that consistently works. Therefore, we recommend that MAC users utilize OpenOffice for the MAC to open and convert XML files.

  11. In GAP 2.0, what is the Country of Origin Chart? faq id: 1087

The Country of Origin Chart page allows you to generate bar and pie charts that show your project members' maternal (mitochondrial DNA) and paternal (Y-chromosome DNA) country of origin. Chart options are:

    • Type: Select Y-DNA (Y-Chromosome DNA) for paternal origins or mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) for maternal origins.
    • Subgroup: Select All to display results for all of your project members who have taken that particular type of test or select one of the subgroups that you have created using theMember Subgrouping page.
    • Chart Type: Select Pie, Column, or Bar.
    • Chart Width: The default is 800px. For groups with project members from forty or more countries, increasing the chart's height will improve the display of Column charts.
    • Chart Height: The default is 500px. For groups with project members from twenty or more countries, increasing the chart's height will improve the display of Bar charts.

Below the Chart is a table that lists each country of origin and the number of project members in it.
