1. What is My Maps?
This is a new feature in your personal page which you can use to see where the ancestors of your matches come from. A pushpin will appear on the map for each match who has entered the latitude and longitude of their most distant known ancestor’s location. If you have entered the latitude and longitude for your own most distant known ancestor, it will also appear on the map so you can compare the locations. The map can display any matching level for Y-DNA and mtDNA, based on what you have tested.
2. How do I put myself on the map?
- Go to your personal page.
- Click on the section titled “User Preferences.”
- Scroll to the bottom of the page. Here you can enter the name, location, and birth and death date of the most distant known ancestor.
- In the blank labeled “Paternal Side:” enter the name and any other information about the most distant known ancestor. You can do the same for the “Maternal Side” entry as well.
- In the blank labeled “Paternal Origin:” enter the latitude and longitude coordinates in decimal format (see How do I get the latitude and longitude? below). You can do the same for “Maternal Origin” entry as well.
- Click “Update.” This will save the information in the system and add the coordinates to the map.
3. How do I get the latitude and longitude?
- Go to your personal page.
- Click on the section titled “User Preferences.”
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and locate the fields where you can enter the latitude and longitude.
- Above these fields is a sentence ending in the words “click here.” Click that link (http://www.familytreedna.com/maporama.html)
- Follow the instructions on that page.
- Please note that clicking that link will cause a window to pop up in your browser. If you have a popup blocker engaged, you may need to temporarily turn it off in order for the window to open.
4. How do I use the map?
Go to your personal page and click on the section labeled “My Maps.” A map will come up. The default setting will place a red pushpin to mark the locations of the most distant ancestors of the paternal line of each of your matches. If you have not tested Y-DNA, the map will default to display the most distant ancestors of the maternal line of each of your matches. If no pushpins appear, you either have no matches or none of your matches has entered their latitude and longitude information.
- To display ancestral locations of Y-DNA 12 marker matches, click the bubble next to “12 Marker” above the map (this option will only appear if you have tested Y-DNA)
- To display ancestral locations of Y-DNA 25 marker matches, click the bubble next to “25 Marker” above the map (this option will only appear if you have tested at least 25 markers)
- To display ancestral locations of Y-DNA 37 marker matches, click the bubble next to “37 Marker” above the map (this option will only appear if you have tested at least 37 markers)
- To display ancestral locations of Y-DNA 67 marker matches, click the bubble next to “67 Marker” above the map (this option will only appear if you have tested 67 markers)
- To display ancestral locations of mtDNA Low Resolution (HVR1) matches, click the bubble next to “Low Resolution (HVR1) Matches” above the map (this option will only appear if you have tested mtDNA)
- To display ancestral locations of mtDNA High Resolution (HVR1+HVR2) matches, click the bubble next to “Low Resolution (HVR2) Matches” above the map (this option will only appear if you have tested both the HVR1 and HVR2 regions of your mtDNA)
- To display ancestral locations of mtDNA full sequence matches, click the bubble next to “Full Sequence Matches” above the map (this option will only appear if you have tested the mtDNA full sequence)
- The color of the pushpin is scaled according to the genetic distance between yourself and your matches (Y-DNA only). The color scale is displayed at the top of the chart.
- Above the color scale, the number of matches that are appearing on the map is listed at the top. This number may be less than the number of matches you have in the Y-DNA Matches or mtDNA Matches section if not all of your matches have entered latitude and longitude information in their User Preferences section (Note: we encourage you to contact your matches and ask them to enter their ancestral latitude and longitude, if known).
- If you have entered the latitude and longitude for your most distant known ancestor in your User Preferences section, your own location will be displayed on the map with a person figure.
- To move the map, click the arrow buttons in the upper left-hand corner OR click on the map, hold down the mouse button and move the mouse to drag the map.
- To zoom in, click on the button labeled "+" in the upper left-hand corner. Street maps will appear as you zoom closer in the US or the UK (for when you visit your relatives).
- To zoom out, click on the button labeled "-" in the upper left-hand corner.
- To view the map as it would appear from a satellite, click the button labeled "Satellite" in the top right-hand corner.
- To view the political map/street map, click "Map" in the top right-hand corner.
- To view the map with both the satellite imagery and the country borders and streets, click "Hybrid" in the top right-hand corner.
- Click on the pushpin to view information about the person at that location
