Understanding and ordering the 25-marker test
Over the course of the last year, as the Family Tree DNA's
genetic database has begun to mature, we have noticed that certain
groups of people - especially in family re-construction projects
- have enjoyed numerous exact matches (12/12).
Most of our clients are Western European, and Western Europe was settled relatively recently by a very limited Y-DNA gene pool, so it is understandable that use of a limited number of markers is likely to provide true genetic matches from a time BEFORE surnames were adopted.
Considering that the primary purpose of
genealogy is to link with relatives - ideally, relatives that we can
draw some version of a paper trail around - FTDNA is now bringing to
the market a much higher resolution test that will contract the time
estimates to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA)- see chart.
Who should order Y-DNA25? This refinement of our existing
12-marker test offers the following advantages:
-
Substantial reduction in the Most Likely Estimate (MLE) to the MRCA.
- Constriction of the tail of the curve to a time frame that
approximates the adoption of the surname by families in the British
Isles.
- An invaluable aid for Family Re-Construction
projects who have found 11/12 or 12/12 matches
and now want to gain a better snapshot of the actual breakdown of
the family tree. For example we suggest that all of our
Re-Construction projects start with our 12 marker test, and come
back and refine only those that match at least 11/12 within their
group.
Should new customers order the new 25-marker test? Now you have a choice, 12,
25 or 37 markers. All tests prove the same basic question: are we related? However
the parameters of WHEN are superior with Y-DNA25. We anticipate
that the 25-marker format will allow us to answer other interesting
Genetic Genealogy questions in the future. Because the University of Arizona (which has the
laboratory that we use) keeps the DNA on file in a locked
refrigerator, if you decide to start with a 12-marker test, you may
return to our site and upgrade your test at any time in the
future.
